Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of species assemblages is a main challenge in ecology. The mechanisms that shape their fluctuations along tropical elevational gradients are particularly poorly understood. Here, we examined spatio-temporal bird an gradient Ecuador. We conducted point counts at three elevations (1000, 2000 3000 m) on 18 1-ha plots repeated sampling eight times over two years (216 hours total). For each plot, obtained data monthly temperatures precipitation...

The earth's major mountain ranges provide opportunities to assess the effects of altitude and land use on stream fauna, but many basic patterns are still undescribed. Macroinvertebrates were therefore sampled from rifle marginal habitats 45 streams in three regions Ecuadorian Andes. Assemblage structure richness assessed relation habitat character, water chemistry catchment use. Land varied humid montane forest Western Eastern Cordillera transition Paramo Central Valley. However, c. 30 %...

Livestock grazing on natural grasslands is widespread with negative consequences to biodiversity. In the High Andes, páramo grassland a distinctive ecosystem where influence of livestock birds poorly documented. We assessed habitat modification related bird guilds in southern Andes Ecuador. recorded occurring along transects located areas which showed gradient (low high) pressure. found decrease abundance specialists more interpret this as loss key necessary for habitat-specialized birds.

The species of the genus Polylepis are most important trees high altitude woodlands in Andes, an area with great climatic variation from Venezuela to Argentina. In humid climate Cajas Massif (southern Ecuador), four native form little known between 2800 and 4400 m a.s.l.: P. reticulata, incana, weberbaueri lanuginosa (the latter, endemic Ecuador). Morphological-functional traits these another introduced (P. racemosa), attributes at population ecosystem levels relevant understanding their...

The ecological condition of tropical Andean rivers are threatened by many human activities including changes in land use and cover watersheds. Current protocols diagnose the structural streams but not their function. In this study we proposed an assessment tool using leaf-litter breakdown as a measure functional health high Southern Ecuador, methodology threshold values adapted to local conditions. We selected 15 three micro-basins (Mazán, Llaviuco Matadero) within or vicinity Cajas National...

Four parallel vertical constructed wetlands, with a total area of 556 m2, are used to treat domestic wastewater, coming from community 550 inhabitants. The system includes pre-treatment an anaerobic filter and post-treatment chlorine, before discharging the effluent ocean. native species macrophytes were planted: Paspalum penisetum, Typha sp, Conocarpres erectus Scirpus lacustris. In situ measurements gas content performed for each bed during operation cycle. After feeding discharge,...

Leucism is a rare chromatic aberration, manifested by the total or partial absence of melanin in skin. This study reports case leucism fish Lebiasina bimaculata  (Characiformes: Lebiasinidae), Chongon river, Ecuador. The individual with presented depigmentation all over body, except iris and on base third scale fourth longitudinal scale-series. With this case, there are 19 records aberrations South American freshwater fish.

Wastewater from a 550-inhabitant community had been treated and discarded using an anaerobic filter. Due to seawater intrusion in the aquifer that supplies water, high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide were detected effluent. A vertical flow wetland was designed 1998 for treating this Four parallel reed beds with total area 556 m2 constructed. During first months operation, mean BOD5 removal efficiency 91% obtained, loads system up 4 g/m2/d grease oils (G&O). In 1999, problems soil...
