Of five patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), four developed psychotic illnesses in adult life. The other was treated antipsychotic medication for many years following a mistaken diagnosis of schizophrenia.
ABSTRACT. The Birmingham Special Needs Register, a cumputerized database, was used to examine the disabilities of, and use of psychoactive (psychotropic anliepileptic) drugs among 1825 people over age 20 with mental retardation. People living in three different types residential setting (hospitals, community facilities family homes) were compared. prevalence physical disability, impaired communication incontinence highest resident hospital, followed by those their families. ihe least...
Introduction: COVID-19 pneumonia presented a unique problem for healthcare systems with the potential to overwhelm hospitals and lead unnecessary morbidity mortality. Safe triage follow up are required manage this unprecedented demand. Methods: We designed pathway assessment of patients based on their resting oxygen saturations response 30 metre rapid walking test. admitted ‘Virtual Ward’ remote oximetry monitoring from Emergency Department, step down inpatient wards local Primary Care ‘Hot...

The Northfield Experiments took place at Hollymoor Hospital, Northfield, Birmingham, during World War II. first experiment was conducted by Bion & Rickman. second evolved gradually; many people contributed to its success, including Foulkes, Main and Bridger. experiments were an important landmark in the evolution of theory practice group psychotherapy therapeutic community movement. They not carried out solely as responses need for mass treatment neurotic disorders among army personnel;...
Seven men with autistic disorders developed mood or psychotic illnesses during adult life. This association has also been described in several previous reports. Although no firm conclusions can be drawn on the basis of case reports alone, it appears that may increase vulnerability to such psychoses. Possible reasons for are discussed, as is treatment.
One neuropathological feature of schizophrenia is a diminished number dendritic spines in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The neuregulin 1 (Nrg1) system involved plasticity spines, chronic stress decreases spine densities Here, we aimed to assess whether Nrg1 deficiency confers vulnerability effects adolescent on plasticity. We also assessed other schizophrenia-relevant neurobiological changes such as microglial cell activation, loss parvalbumin (PV) interneurons, induction complement...
The growth in the number of people with learning disability living community presents a major challenge to primary care services. There is high prevalence physical and mental illness among these patients, but disorders may be inadequately managed. This reflects problems access services, liaison between Policy options for improving healthcare provided include: specific monitoring by FHSAs; improved training; clarification responsibility medical care; regular examinations; improvements...
The use of psychoactive medication was examined among 64 people with mental retardation who moved from two hospitals to the community as part a plan resettlement. There no significant difference between overall antipsychotic drugs 2 years before discharge, on date discharge and after at least 6 months (mean 25 months) living, although changes in doses prescribed had taken place. About 39% were receiving antipsychotics, 32% antiepileptics, 7% antidepressants 8% benzodiazepines.
An eight-year-old boy with Asperger's syndrome was given haloperidol to control agitation and aggressive outbursts. Withdrawal of the drug after two years followed by Tourette-like symptoms. Subsequently neither nor a second antipsychotic altered core features syndrome, despite suppressing movement disorder. His first exposure neuroleptics in utero.
Abstract Motivation The output of electrospray ionization–liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (ESI-LC-MS) is influenced by multiple sources noise and major contributors can be broadly categorized as baseline, random chemical noise. Noise has a negative impact on the identification quantification peptides, which influences reliability reproducibility MS-based proteomics data. Most attempts at denoising have been made either spectra or chromatograms independently, thus, important 2D...
The clinical diagnosis of dementia in people with Down syndrome is complex. authors describe a significant decline adaptive functioning individuals compared to that non-demented group. A new method confirming the by means serial assessment described.
N-Amination of 3-amino-5-tert-butylpyrazole 11 with hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid gave the 1,5-diaminopyrazole 12 good regiochemical control. The reactions certain electrophiles (e.g. acetic anhydride, DMF acetal, aromatic aldehydes, methoxymethylene Meldrum's acid) took place at one (or both) amino groups and no cyclised products were obtained. Reaction carbon disulfide followed by alkylation under basic conditions provided pyrazolo[1,5-b]1,2,4-triazole 26 which is a useful photographic...
