Many saline lakes throughout the world are shrinking due to overexploitation of water in their drainage basins. Among them two world’s largest lakes, U.S.A.’s Great Salt Lake, and Iran’s Lake Urmia. Here we provide a comparative analysis desiccation these that provides insights on management decisions may help save relevant lake worldwide. Urmia were once remarkably similar size, depth, salinity, geographic setting. High rates population growth both basins have fueled demand for irrigated...

<title>Abstract</title> Saline lakes are hypersensitive to changes in their water balance and therefore show amplified responses climatic land-use catchment. However, despite the resulting, often dramatic ecological consequences, saline rank low on policy agendas as they assumed support few ecosystem services levels of biodiversity. Here, we challenge this view evaluate threatened species 84 distributed across globe. We found that harbour not only aquatic biota but also a diverse range...

This study investigates critical run-off and sediment production sources in a forested Kasilian watershed located northern Iran. The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model was set up to simulate the yields. WEPP calibrated validated against measured rainfall–run-off–sediment data. Results showed that simulated yields of were agreement with data for calibration validation periods. While low medium values adequately by model, high yield underestimated. Performance evaluated as very good...

Urmia Lake is a large hyper-saline lake located in the northwest of Iran. It plays an important role hydrology, climate and ecology its surrounding regions. In recent years, water level has been dropped significantly. This study investigates seasonal annual variations area from 2000 to 2011 using remote sensing data. MODIS imageries Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used extract surface lake. Results reveal significant decline during last past 12 years. Analysis images...

This paper evaluates 12 reservoir evaporation methods that applied to calculate daily Karkheh (Iran) created by world’s sixth largest dam. The Bowen ratio energy budget (BREB) formula is chosen as reference method for purpose evaluating alternative methods. ranked based on their accuracy, sensitivity input variables,...

Abstract Reservoirs are the key infrastructure of water resources management. A controlling variable reservoir operation is evaporation, which in semi‐arid and arid regions may consume a large fraction storage annually. This paper assesses role evaporation choice methods on operation. The calculated with standard policy (SOP). Several efficiency criteria employed to rank evaporation‐calculation technique for order preference by similarity ideal solution (TOPSIS). method presented this...
