Species identification and antifungal susceptibility tests were carried out on 212 Candida isolates obtained from bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections dialysis-associated peritonitis, cases attended at a Brazilian public tertiary hospital January 1998 to 2005.Candida albicans represented 33% of the isolates, parapsilosis 31.1%, tropicalis 17.9%,Candida glabrata 11.8%, others species 6.2%. In blood culture, C. was most frequently encountered (48%). The resistance levels azoles...
This paper presents data on fungal peritonitis (FP) in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) at the University Hospital of Botucatu Medical School, São Paulo, Brazil. In a total 422 patients, 30 developed FP, from which medical records and isolates 23 patient cases were studied. All presented abdominal pain, cloudy effluent, needed hospitalization, had catheter removed treated with fluconazole or plus 5-flucitosine; six them died due to FP. Concerning agents, it was observed that...
Over the last decades, there have been important changes in epidemiology of Candida infections. In recent years, species emerged as causes invasive infections mainly among immunocompromised patients. This study analyzed spp. isolates and compared frequency biofilm production different sources isolation: blood, urine, vulvovaginal secretions peritoneal dialysis fluid. Biofilm was quantified 327 obtained from patients attended at a Brazilian tertiary public hospital (Botucatu, Sao Paulo). C....
We evaluated the frequency of enterococci from food and found 95.2% positivity, being E. faecium faecalis most frequent species. High-level streptomycin resistance was observed, as well gelatinase hemolysis activity, showing potential role environmental strains reservoir virulence traits.
ABSTRACT Inteins are coding sequences that transcribed and translated with flanking then excised by an autocatalytic process. There two types of inteins in fungi, mini-inteins full-length inteins, both which present a splicing domain containing well-conserved amino acid sequences. Full-length also homing endonuclease makes the intein mobile genetic element. These parasitic elements located highly conserved genes may allow for differentiation closely related species Candida parapsilosis...
Phenotypic and genotypic SPM IMP metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) detection also the determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) to imipenem, meropenem ceftazidime were evaluated in 47 multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from clinical specimens. Polymerase chain reaction detected 14 positive samples either blaSPM or blaIMP genes, while best phenotypic assay (ceftazidime substrate mercaptopropionic acid inhibitor) 13 these samples. Imipenem, MICs higher for MBL compared...
Yeasts are becoming a common cause of nosocomial fungal infections that affect immunocompromised patients. Such can evolve into sepsis, whose mortality rate is high. This study aimed to evaluate the viability Candida species identification by automated system Vitek-Biomerieux (Durham, USA). Ninety-eight medical charts referencing spp. samples available for were retrospectively analyzed. The with card recommended laboratory routine use and presents 80.6% agreement reference method. By...
Yeasts are becoming a common cause of nosocomial fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. Such often develop into sepsis with high mortality rates. The aim this study was to evaluate some the numerous factors associated development candidemia. Medical records were retrospectively analyzed 98 Candida spp. Results showed that most prevalent risk for developing candidemia were: antibiotics and antifungal agents (93.9% 79.6%, respectively); use central venous catheter (93.9%); mechanical...
