Plants in the Bromeliaceae known as tank bromeliads essentially lack stems and absorptive roots instead take up water from reservoirs formed by their overlapping leaf bases. For such plants, hydraulic conductance is plant conductance. Their simple strap-shaped leaves parallel venation make them suitable for modeling based on vasculature other anatomical morphological traits. of bromeliad Guzmania lingulata were investigated a lowland tropical forest Costa Rica shaded glasshouse Los Angeles,...

The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of 4- 6-coordinate Bi3+ coordination complexes are reported. Bi(bzq)3 (1) [Bi(bzq)2]Br (2) (bzq = benzo[h]quinoline) synthesized by reaction 9-Li-bzq with BiCl3 BiBr3, respectively. Absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, DFT studies suggest that 1 has 42% Bi 6s character in its highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) as a result six σ* interactions the bzq ligands. Excitation at 450 nm results broad emission feature 520 nm,...

We compared the effects of different light environments on leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf ) for two congeneric epiphytes, tank bromeliads Guzmania lingulata (L.) Mez and monostachia Rusby ex Mez. They occur sympatrically at study site, although G. is both wider ranging typically found in higher light. collected plants from levels irradiance measured Kleaf as well related morphological anatomical traits. Leaf xylem (Kxy was estimated tracheid dimensions, outside (Kox derived a leaky cable...

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of group 4 organometallics supported by β ‐diketonates is reported. Sterically hindered ‐diketonates, such as 2,6‐dimesitylbenzoyl pinacolone ( L 1 ) acetylmesitylene 2 ), preclude the formation tetrakis‐ tris‐chelates, halting at cis ‐octahedrally coordinated M( n Cl (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; , ). Metathesis with benzylmagnesium chloride affords Bn Hf) reduced Ti( Bn(THF) species. These are first structurally‐characterized metal alkyl complexes...

Abstract Premise The consequences of acidity for plant performance are profound, yet the prevalence and causes low pH in bromeliad tank water unknown despite its functional relevance to key members many neotropical communities. Methods We investigated eight species field widely occurring Guzmania monostachia varying light. compared changes over time between artificial tanks containing a solution combined from several plants. Aquaporin transcripts were measured plants at two levels pH....

The need for expanded energy storage motivates material development scalable aqueous secondary batteries. combination of transition metals with redox-active organics represents a new approach to functional design. Here, we detail the synthesis titanium(IV) 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (Ti(1,8-DHAQ)2) as novel and demonstrate its use negative electrode in an battery.
