Abstract. The Dutch Wadden Sea is a region of intertidal flats located between the chain Islands and mainland. We present numerical model results on tidal prisms residual flows through inlets across one main watersheds. also provides insight into pathways fresh water originating from two sluices at Afsluitdijk (enclosure dike) use passive tracers. All these are obtained three-dimensional simulations carried out with General Estuarine Transport Model (GETM), horizontal resolution 200 m...

In April 2001 four hydrographic sections perpendicular to the southern East Madagascar Current were surveyed as part of Agulhas Sources Experiment. Observations with a vessel mounted and lowered ADCP produced information on current field while temperature, salinity, oxygen nutrient data obtained CTD‐Rosette system, gave water mass structure currents southeast Madagascar. The peak velocity in pole‐ward through these had typical magnitude ∼110 cm/s, width this was order 120 km. mean volume...

Abstract Results are presented from campaigns carried out in March and May 2012 across the main channel of Vlie Inlet western Dutch Wadden Sea. On both occasions current velocities concentrations suspended particulate matter (SPM) were measured at six stations over one tidal cycle. Concentrations found to be high only during late ebb early flood, implying a brief but intense export import SPM, respectively. Transport water SPM occurs predominantly southwestern part channel. The prism varies...

In 2001, two relatively saline intrathermocline eddies (ITEs) were observed southeast of Madagascar at 200 m depth. They are characterized by a subsurface salinity maximum over 35.8 potential temperatures between 18° and 22°C. The oxygen concentrations within the high cores slightly elevated compared with those surrounding water. Their horizontal extent is about 180 km, several times Rossby deformation radius, while their thickness 150 m. circulation around ITEs anticyclonic velocities 20 to...

Bifurcation analysis on e ows in a two-layer shallow-water model is used to clarify the dynamical origin of low-frequency variability double-gyre wind-driven ocean circulation. In many previous studies, generic variations appear be associated with distinct regimes, characterized by level kinetic energy mean ow. From these transient ow computations, current view that and transitions between them, arise through complex nonlinear interaction its high-frequency instabilities (the eddies). On...

The temporal variability of the midlatitude double-gyre wind-driven ocean circulation is studied in a three-layer quasi-geostrophic model over broad range parameter space. Four different types flow regimes are found, each characterized by specific time-mean state and spatio-temporal variability. As lateral friction decreased, these encountered following order: viscous antisymmetric regime, asymmetric quasi-homoclinic regime inertial regime. (at high low friction, respectively) mainly caused...

At tidal inlets large amounts of water are exchanged with the adjacent sea during cycle. The residual flows, net effect ebb and flood, generally small compared to gross flux, they vary in magnitude sign from one period other, their long-term mean varies year year. Here we focus on temporal variability flows Marsdiep inlet, which is western-most inlet Wadden Sea, a lagoon along coasts Netherlands, Germany Denmark. We compare transport high-resolution numerical model velocity profile data...
