The oxygenation of Earth's surface fundamentally altered global biogeochemical cycles and ultimately paved the way for rise metazoans at end Proterozoic. However, current estimates atmospheric oxygen (O2) levels during billion years leading up to this time vary widely. On basis chromium (Cr) isotope data from a suite Proterozoic sediments China, Australia, North America, interpreted in context similar depositional environments Phanerozoic time, we find evidence inhibited oxidation Cr...
ABSTRACT The paper describes a calibration standard for quantitative in-situ multi-element analysis of sulphide minerals by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Standard STDGL2b2 is mixture 25% Zn concentrate and 75% pyrrhotite doped with number additional trace elements fused into an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) glass disk. homogeneity the disk has been tested 55 interest. All except Se, Tl, Au Pt are homogenous ( For pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena...
A two-fold subdivision for stratiform sediment-hosted Pb-Zn (sedimentary exhalative, sedex) deposits is proposed, based on fundamental differences in the chemistry of mineralizing brines. The type sedimentary basin from which ore fluids are derived, and lithologies contained within basin, control these fluid chemistry. The two discrete brine types capable transporting Zn Pb oxidized brines reduced, acidic McArthur-type (e.g., McArthur River, Mount Isa, Hilton) precipitate...
Faced with ongoing depletion of near-surface ore deposits, geologists are increasingly required to explore for deep deposits or those lying beneath surface cover. The result is increased drilling costs and a need maximize the value drill hole samples collected. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis pyrite one tool that showing promise in exploration. Since trace element content approximates composition fluid from which it precipitated...
The fine-grained, laminated, stratiform zinc-lead ores of the McArthur River (HYC) ore deposit have been subject continued debate in regard to timing mineralization.Early workers (e.g., Croxford and Jephcott, 1972;Lambert, 1976) considered be sedimentary-exhalative (sedex), while more recent researchers Williams, 1978a;Eldridge et al., 1993;Hinman, 1996) argued for a syndiagenetic replacement origin.Several lines evidence, including studies on regional sedimentology, sediment geochemistry,...
Complete dissolution is essential to obtain accurate analytical results using ICP‐MS. In this study, decomposition techniques (i.e. acid digestions Savillex Teflon vials, a high pressure digestion system and microwave oven, combined lithium tetraborate fusion ‐ HF/HNO3 sodium peroxide sinter) for the total of different types geological reference materials have been investigated. vial effective basaltic samples. The HF/HClO4 (PicoTrace TC‐805 system, Bovenden, Germany) allows basalts...
Neutron activation of Pd, Au, and Ir in samples from (1) economically significant Ni sulfide deposits Western Australia, (2) the host rocks these deposits, (3) hydrothermal and/or metasomatic (mainly millerite) mineralization peridotite at Nullagine, (4) replacement (volcanic-exhalative?) Ni-Cu Sherlock Bay, (5) volcanic-exhalative sulfides inter flow sediments Kambalda are used to show that Pd can be discriminate between various origins (magmatic, volcanic-exhalative,...
The HYC Zn-Pb-Ag deposit at McArthur River is the largest known and least deformed Australian sedimenthosted stratiform base metal deposit. A study of mineralogical, geochemical, isotopic zonation through the deposit reveals concentric distribution patterns in (1) occurrence nodular carbonate, (2) δ34S composition of sphalerite, (3) microscopic ore textures. correlation previously documented lateral metal zonation with these other precludes exclusive postsedimentation mineralization...
High resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) was used to measure Pb isotope ratios in standard solutions and mineral digests. The RSD values obtained for208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 206Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/206Pb 207Pb/206Pb were 0.13, 0.11, 0.046 0.048%, respectively (values as 1σ). These from 30 analyses of three different sample types (multi-element standard, NIST SRM 981 a Broken Hill galena digest). Based on 39 11 samples locations around Australia, the difference...
Lateritization of the Perseverance nickel-sulfide deposit, near Agnew, Western Australia, has produced mineralogical and chemical changes in sulfides serpentinized dunite host rocks culminating a thick goethite-quartz-magnesite gossan. The trace minor elements Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, Ir, As, Sb, Tl, Se, Co, Cr were analyzed 30 samples to assess their mobility under conditions extreme weathering. Gold, Tl are retained or enriched from oxidized zone, while Ag is lost. additional metal must have been...
Abstract Fission‐track dating has been applied for the first time to detrital mineral grains in sedimentary rocks. Unfossiliferous sandstones associated with Cambrian greenstones near Tatong, Victoria contain zircon an average age of 427 ± 20 m.y. This date provides a maximum sandstones, so that they are younger than rocks, and have tectonically juxtaposed. Radiometric dates eastern highlands range from 390 460 m.y., this mixed granitic‐metamorphic terrain may be source zircons dated.
