Abstract The endoperoxides of β-carotene (βCar-EPOs) are regarded as main products the chemical deactivation 1 O 2 by β-carotene, one most important antioxidants, following a concerted singlet-singlet reaction. Here we challenge this view showing that βCar-EPOs formed in absence non-concerted triplet-triplet reaction: 3 + → βCar-EPOs, which manifests strong biradical character. Thus, reactivity towards oxygen is governed its excited triplet state. while being stable dark, photochemically...
The LH1 complex is the major light-harvesting antenna of purple photosynthetic bacteria. Its role to capture photons, and then store them transfer excitation energy reaction center. structure modular it cooperatively self-assembles from subunits composed short transmembrane polypeptides that reversibly bind photoactive cofactors: bacteriochlorophyll carotenoid. assembly, intra-complex interactions features can be controlled in micellar media by varying surfactant concentration adding...
