We investigate with unprecedented accuracy the correlations between dynamical mass-to-light ratio M/L and other global observables of E S0 galaxies. construct two-integral Jeans three-integral Schwarzschild models for a sample 25 E/S0 galaxies SAURON integral-field stellar kinematics. find tight correlation form (M/L)=(3.80+/-0.14)*(sigma/200 km/s)^(0.84+/-0.07) (in I-band) luminosity-weighted second moment (sigma) line-of-sight velocity-distribution within Re. The observed rms scatter in...

We present the emission-line fluxes and kinematics of 48 representative elliptical lenticular galaxies obtained with our custom-built integral-field spectrograph SAURON. Hb, [OIII], [NI] emission lines were measured using a new procedure that simultaneously fits both stellar spectrum lines. Using this technique we can detect down to an equivalent width 0.1A set by current limitations in describing galaxy spectra synthetic real templates, rather than quality spectra. Emission is detected 75%...
2D stellar kinematics of 48 representative E and S0 galaxies obtained with the SAURON IFS reveal that early-type appear in two broad flavours, depending on whether they exhibit clear large-scale rotation or not. We define a new parameter LambdaR which involves luminosity weighted averages over full kinematic field, as proxy to quantify observed projected angular momentum per unit mass. use it basis for classification: are separated into slow fast rotators (SRs, FRs), have values within their...
We analyse the orbital distribution of E and S0 galaxies using SAURON integral-field stellar kinematics. construct anisotropy (V/sigma,epsilon) diagram, for 48 E/S0 from survey. For a subsample 24 consistent with axisymmetry, we use three-integral axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models to recover detailed find good agreement derived diagram. We present a stellar population analysis of the absorption line strength maps for 48 early-type galaxies from SAURON sample. Using index Hβ, Fe5015 and Mg b, measured in Lick/IDS system spatially binned to constant signal-to-noise ratio, together with predictions up-to-date models, we estimate simple population-equivalent (SSP-equivalent) age, metallicity abundance ratio [α/Fe] over two-dimensional field extending up approximately one effective radius. A discussion calibrations differences...
We present the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey, a mosaic of nine fields covering 90\% entire HUDF region with 10-hour deep exposure time, plus deeper 31-hour in single 1.15 arcmin2 field. The improved observing strategy and advanced data reduction results datacubes sub-arcsecond spatial resolution (0.65 arcsec at 7000 A) accurate astrometry (0.07 rms). compare broadband photometric properties to HST photometry, finding good agreement zeropoint up mAB=28 but an increasing scatter for faint...
We introduce Zurich Atmosphere Purge (ZAP), an approach to sky subtraction based on principal component analysis (PCA) that we have developed for the Multi Unit Spectrographic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectrograph.
