Abstract The segregation of bacteria, inorganic solutes, and total organic carbon between liquid water ice during winter formation on lakes can significantly influence the concentration survival microorganisms in icy systems their roles biogeochemical processes. Our study quantifies distributions bacteria solutes solid phases progressive freezing. We simulated lake mesocosm experiments using from perennially (Antarctica) seasonally (Alaska Montana, United States) ice‐covered lakes. then...
The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) has undergone significant changes in air and seawater temperatures during the last 50 years. Although highly stenotherm organisms are expected to be severely affected by increase of temperature, high-resolution datasets temperature within coastal areas WAP (where diverse marine communities have been reported) not commonly available. Here we report on within-year (2016–2017) variation at three sites Doumer Island, Palmer Archipelago, WAP. Within a year,...
Ice shelves surround ∼ 75% of Antarctica's coastline and are highly sensitive to climate change; several have recently collapsed others predicted in the near future. Marine waters beneath ice harbor active ecosystems, while adjacent seas can be important areas bottom water formation. Despite their oceanographic significance, logistical constraints resulted few opportunities directly sample sub-ice shelf cavities. Here, we present first data on microbial diversity biogeochemistry McMurdo...
Abstract. Pío XI, the largest glacier of Southern Patagonia Icefield, reached its neoglacial maximum extent in 1994 and is one few glaciers that area which not retreating. In view recent warming it important to understand responses climate changes. Due remoteness harsh conditions Patagonia, no systematic mass balance studies have been performed. this study we derived net accumulation rates for period 2000–2006 from a 50 m (33.2 4 weq) ice core collected XI (2600 a.s.l., 49°16'40"S,...
Climate change and anthropogenic factors can alter biodiversity lead to changes in community structure function. Despite the potential impacts, no long-term records of climatic influences on microbial communities exist. The Tibetan Plateau is a highly sensitive region that currently undergoing significant alteration resulting from both climate increased human activity. Ice cores glaciers this serve as unique natural archives bacterial abundance composition, contain concomitant environmental...
We present the first long-term, highly resolved prokaryotic cell concentration record obtained from a polar ice core. This record, West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide (WD) core, spanned Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to early Holocene (EH) and showed distinct fluctuations in coincident with major climatic states. The time series also revealed ~1,500-year periodicity greater amplitude during Deglaciation (LDG). Higher lower variability occurred LGM EH than LDG. A sevenfold decrease coincided...
ABSTRACT Microorganisms were the earliest inhabitants on our planet that occupy nearly every environment, and play a major role in biogeochemical cycles. Despite their global importance, there remains paucity of data microbial responses to long-term environmental climatic changes. are known be immured glacial ice, but no high-resolution temporal records density exist, owing large part lack appropriate clean methodology allows for rapid analysis samples over depth. We describe time efficient...
Abstract The first analyses of biological components in glaciers the Chilean lake district are presented based on microalgae biovolume, pollen and other microorganisms detected shallow (∼10 m) firn/ice cores. Three cores were retrieved, two at Volcán Mocho-Choshuenco (39°55′ S, 72°02′ W; summit 2422 m a.s.l; east glacier 2000 a.s.l.), one Osorno (41°06′ 72°30′ 2652 a.s.l.). Microalgae, protozoa quantified samples obtained from show clear fluctuations interpreted as seasonal signs. In...
This study documents for the first time presence of testate amoebae on glaciers. Three shallow firn cores 10 m depth were obtained from Mocho-Choshuenco and Osorno volcanoes, Southern Andes, Chile, in October November, 2005. Euglyphid detected 28 samples that correspond to spring-summer layers cores. Inspection 454 collected individuals reveals four different taxa. these taxa, Trinema lineare, enchelys Puytoracia bergeri have previously been reported ice-free environments. The fourth taxon...
A quantitative survey of the aquatic invertebrate community at a salar on Chilean Altiplano is described. To establish taxonomic composition and abundance we monitored inter-annual changes in structure for four consecutive years covering different conditions. The was composed 21 taxa, representing 16 families, mainly dominated by arthropods. We found high number endemic species compared to other freshwater systems despite low abundances detected. There were statistically significant...
