An experiment to measure the muon nuclear capture rate in ultrapure gaseous hydrogen (8 atm, 293\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K) has been performed using a special target which system of gas proportional counters, working with pure itself, were operating. Neutrons from reactions detected scintillation-counter technique, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray background was eliminated by pulse-shape discrimination. The conditions ensured that captures taking place $\ensuremath{\mu}p$ atomic...

The transfer of negative muons from the ground state muonic hydrogen to argon and helium has been measured in gaseous mixtures at pressures between 10 15 bars different relative concentrations. rate argon, reduced liquid-hydrogen density [${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{p\mathrm{Ar}}$ =1.42(4)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{11}$ ${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$], agrees well with those obtained ten times higher pressures....

Hydrogen outgassing is the most significant factor limiting attainment of rates below 10−12 mbar l s−1 cm−2 in stainless steel vacuum systems. This limit turns out to be crucial very large systems, like VIRGO tubes (2 1.2 m diam, 3000 length). Heating raw material at 400 °C air was suggested as a money saving alternative classical heating 950 °C. We report results hydrogen content analysis performed on samples submitted different treatments, and also measurement prototype tube (1.2-m-diam,...

VIRGO is a detector of gravitational waves based on laser interferometer with 3 km long arms, now under construction. In order to detect down 10 Hz, the seismic noise has be reduced by several orders magnitude. New mechanical filters using cantilever springs as elastic elements have been developed for isolation system. The spring total stiffness more than one magnitude magnetic antispring. A control system allows keep length constant. new provide an attenuation ≥40 dB each frequencies above...

Stochastic cooling in storage rings was a great success: the present paper gives complete theory for application of same general concepts to Penning traps. The structural difference between ring and trap requires revision starting points on which base theory. Not surprisingly, however, final results exhibit many similarities. One main differences is that noise effects are best treated, trap, by introducing limiting energy ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{\mathrm{lim}}$, proportional amplitude,...

A wideband (dc to 500 Hz) low noise accelerometer has been developed. It makes use of a suspended mass whose displacement relative the supporting structure is sensed by linear variable differential transformer. works both in horizontal and vertical direction. The electronics connected mechanical through 12 m long cables. spectral sensitivity 7×10−10 (m/s2)/√Hz below 6 Hz. will be used perform an inertial damping resonances suspension mirrors VIRGO, interferometric antenna for gravitational...
