The physical basis for the transparency of cornea to visible light is investigated theoretically in terms molecular structure as depicted by electron microscopy. Electron micrographs show that major portion contains long cylindrical fibrils arranged a quasi-random fashion, with local order extending over distances comparable wavelength light. Heretofore, generally accepted explanation has been supposed crystalline arrangement fibrils, because this was only distribution could ensure on simple...
Functionalized trialkoxysilanes are widely used to modify the surface properties of materials and devices. It will be shown that photoinitiated radical-based thiol-ene "click" reaction provides a simple efficient route diverse trialkoxysilanes. A total 15 were synthesized by reacting either alkenes with 3-mercaptopropyltrialkoxysilane or thiols allyltrialkoxysilanes in presence photoinitiator. The functionalized obtained quantitative near-quantitative yields high purity. photochemical...
Abstract A relationship has been derived between intraocular pressure and pulsatile blood flow in the eye. Measurements of show a time variation that is associated with component arterial pressure. Experimental results provide means transforming changes into ocular volume changes. The eye represented by chamber elastic walls, incoming incompressible fluid (blood), steady outgoing blood. Under these conditions, rate through can be approximated from instantaneous measurements. Data healthy...
The reactivity of various lanthana powders in air was studied. materials rapidly hydroxylate to form a stable hydroxide, La(OH) 3 , at room temperature. Smaller amounts an oxycarbonate species (La 2 O CO ) are also observed following exposure. This phase is hydroxylation. All oxide synthesized here show rapid reactions so that 24 h exposure atmosphere generally sufficient cause complete hydroxylation rate reaction related the crystallite size as determined by XRD. found follow two‐stage...
1. A theoretical and experimental analysis of the relationship corneal stromal ultrastructure with light transmission has been made in an attempt to resolve recent contradictory explanations transparency. 2. The spatial distribution collagen fibrils electronmicrographs rabbit stroma analysed terms a radial function. results indicate presence local order extending at least 200 nm from individual fibrils. 3. observed was used as basis compare theoretically derived experimentally determined...
1. The studies described herein involve the use of light scattering measurements to characterize ultrastructural arrangement constituent collagen fibrils in rabbit corneal stromas. 2. Theoretical techniques for calculating be expected from structures revealed by electron micrographs are discussed, and comparison with experimental tests validity these structures. 3. wave‐length dependence transmission angular normal corneas is agreement short range ordering depicted micrographs. 4. on...
The advances in information and communication technologies have been largely predicated around the increases computer processor power derived from constant miniaturization (and consequent higher density) of individual transistors. Transistor design has unchanged for many years progress scaling basic CMOS device. Scaling enabled by photolithography improvements (i.e. patterning) secondary processing such as deposition, implantation, planarization, etc. Perhaps most important processes is...
Padé approximants to the electronic energy of atoms and molecules are investigated by using expansion parameter Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory as a formal variable. These problems characterized fact that exact Hamiltonian is known and, although split into zero order perturbing part, recovered when equals unity. The present study shows for these sequence [ N +1/ ] special in that, set equal unity, numerical value each invariant two modifications zero-order Hamiltonian; namely,...
Coupled ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials, known as multiferroics, are an important class of materials that allow magnetism to be manipulated through the application electric fields. Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO3, is most-studied intrinsic magnetoelectric multiferroic because it maintains both magnetic ordering well above room temperature. Here we report use epitaxy-free wet chemical methods create strained nanoporous BiFeO3. We find material shows large changes in saturation magnetization...
Extending the resolution and spatial proximity of lithographic patterning below critical dimensions 20 nm remains a key challenge with very-large-scale integration, especially if persistent scaling silicon electronic devices is sustained. One approach, which relies upon directed self-assembly block copolymers by chemical-epitaxy, capable achieving high density 1 : approaching 5 nm. Herein, we outline an integration-favourable strategy for fabricating areal arrays aligned nanowires PS-b-PMMA...
Block copolymer thin films require selective elimination of one their constituent blocks to access potential as lithographic nanopatterns. This paper demonstrates an on-substrate TEM-based approach for establishing the removal poly(methyl methyacrylate) from vertically oriented lamellar polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and subsequent transfer underlying silicon by reactive ion etching. The ex situ microscopy technique presents insight into PMMA, etch end point, PS...
We report on test results for a single phase, 60-Hz, 13.8 kV/6.9 kV, 1-MVA high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer which was completed in February, 1998. This models many ways full scale section of 30-MVA HTS commercial design. The windings are cryocooled the range 25 K and made with low-cost, surface-coated BSCCO-2212 conductor. Heat leaks reduced using liquid nitrogen thermal ballast reservoir. use superconductors can substantially reduce losses, weight, size, noise potential...
A statistical analysis based on a direct summation of electric fields scattered by individual fibrils is developed to calculate corneal scattering from the fibril distributions shown in electron micrographs. Unlike previous analyses, method can be used for swollen and scarred corneas as well normal corneas. The tested applying it case rabbit cornea. results are good agreement with those obtained using radial distribution formulation.
Abstract Lamellae (symmetric) forming polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) block copolymers (BCPs) were used to produce nanostructured thin films by solvent (toluene) casting (spin‐coating) onto silicon substrates. As expected, strong micellization of PS‐P4VP in toluene results poorly ordered hexagonally structures films. Following deposition the annealed various solvents and mixtures thereof. A range both morphologies including micelle microphase separated observed. It was found...
The cornea is the clear front covering of eye through which we see and composed collagen fibrils embedded in an optically homogeneous ground substance. It has long been recognized that these scatter light transparency results from interference effects due to ordering spatial arrangement about one another. nature this its disruption abnormal corneas great current interest. present study reviews experimental scattering electron microscopic evidence relevant problem. This suggests theoretical...
Through a combination of nanoimprint lithography and block copolymer self-assembly, highly regular dewetting process symmetric diblock occurs whereby the hierarchal formation microdroplets concentric nanorings emerges. The is driven by unique chemical properties geometrical layout underlying patterned silsesquioxane micrometer-sized templates. Given presence nonpreferential substrate−polymer interactions, directed was utilized to produce uniform arrays microsized droplets microphase...
