By exploiting the core-excitation-induced dissociation of ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$, we find that Auger emission exhibits a Doppler-like energy shift. We show this to be manifestation localization core hole and propose problem core-hole versus delocalization in spectroscopies may resolved by considering nature measurement.

The independent particle approximation is shown to break down for the photoionization of both inner and outer $n\ensuremath{\ell}$ $(\ensuremath{\ell}>0)$ electrons all atoms, at high enough energy, owing interchannel interactions with nearby $\mathrm{ns}$ channels. effect illustrated Ne $2p$ in 1 keV photon energy range through a comparison theory experiment. implications x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy molecules condensed matter are discussed.

A gas-phase time-of-flight (TOF) apparatus, capable of supporting as many six electron-TOF analyzers viewing the same interaction region, has been developed to measure energy- and angle-resolved electrons with kinetic energies up 5 keV. Each analyzer includes a newly designed lens system that can retard about 2% their initial energy without significant loss transmission; thus achieve resolving power (E/ΔE) greater than 104 over wide kinetic-energy range. Such high is comparable photon...

Second-order [ O(k(2)), k = omega/c] nondipole effects in soft-x-ray photoemission are demonstrated via an experimental and a theoretical study of angular distributions neon valence photoelectrons the 100-1200 eV photon-energy range. A newly derived expression for nondipolar characterizes second-order using four new parameters with primary contributions from pure-quadrupole octupole-dipole interference terms. Independent-particle calculations these account significant portion existing...

Reduced precipitation in the Miocene triggered geographic contraction of rainforest ecosystems around world. In Australia, this change was particularly pronounced; mesic that once dominated landscape transformed into shrublands, grasslands, and deserts today. A lack well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to understand nature Australian before aridification. Here, we report on an exceptionally biota from New South Wales, Australia. The femtosecond dissociation of HCl after core excitation has been studied through the resonant Auger decay. spectra contain contributions from decay occurring at both ``molecular'' and ``atomic'' internuclear distances. We have observed a new interference mechanism in these spectra: An atomic spectral line develops into negative contribution, ``hole,'' when detuning energy maximum $\mathrm{Cl}{2p}^{\ensuremath{-}1}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{*}$ resonance. Resonant x-ray scattering theory...

Anion-yield spectroscopy using x rays is shown to be a selective probe of molecular core-level processes, providing unique experimental verification shape resonances. For CO, partial anion and cation yields are presented for photon energies near the C $K$ edge. The ${\mathrm{O}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ yield exhibits features above threshold related only doubly excited states, in contrast which also exhibit pronounced structure due well-known ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{*}$ resonance.
