Abstract Recently, the tiger-cat species complex was split into Leopardus tigrinus and guttulus , along with other proposed schemes. We performed a detailed analysis integrating ecological modeling, biogeography, phenotype of four originally recognized subspecies— oncilla pardinoides —and presented new multidimensional niche depiction species. Species distribution models used > 1400 records from museums photographs, all checked for accuracy. Morphological data were obtained...
Abstract The scientific question addressed in this study is how mammals the Caatinga dry forest of northeast Brazil adapt to seasonal variations, specifically regarding their activity and occupancy patterns species richness composition. To investigate, we deployed camera traps across Furna Feia National Park during both wet seasons 2018. We utilized methods such as rarefaction curves, circular statistics, models analyze data collected from 44 40 sampling points seasons, respectively....
Abstract Context Human activities are reducing the amount and quality of natural landscapes. Understanding how such changes affect spatial temporal ecology mammal populations will enable us to foresee communities be structured in Anthropocene. Objectives Here, we evaluated occupancy, intensity use, activity patterns mesopredator canid Cerdocyon thous affected by topographic variation, habitat amount, fragmentation chronic anthropogenic disturbances. Methods Camera trapping data were obtained...
Abstract The evolutionary history and taxonomy of the Leopardus tigrinus species complex have been studied based on several approaches, mostly employing genetic morphological data, leading to distinct classification schemes. We approached this problem from an ecological perspective, with 2 main goals: (i) evaluate niche differences among regional L. populations determine extent divergence them; (ii) identify environmental barriers historical dispersal that could driven differentiation...
Abstract Aim Planning conservation action requires accurate estimates of abundance and distribution the target species. For many mammals, particularly those inhabiting tropical forests, there are insufficient data to assess their status. We present a framework for predicting species using jaguarundi ( Herpailurus yagouaroundi ), poorly known felid which basic information on is lacking. Location Mesoamerica South America. Time Period From 2003 2021. Taxa yagouaroundi. Methods combined...
We documented the first reports of Ocelot, Leopardus pardalis (Linnaeus, 1758), in Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil. In December 2014, one adult male was road-killed an Atlantic Forest remnant São Gonçalo Amarante municipality. Another three animals were killed by hunters Caatinga between 2012 and municipalities Lajes Santana Matos. These records provide important information about occurrence distribution conservation this mesocarnivore South America.
The collared peccary Pecari tajacu (Artiodactyla, Tayassuidae) is widely distributed and included in the Least Concern (LC) category by IUCN assessment. However, threats such as hunting habitat loss have extinguished some of its populations Brazil. Additionally, much current occupation area remains unknown, especially northeastern We herein present first record a Caatinga-Atlantic Forest ecotone state Rio Grande do Norte, This poorly sampled region represents presence this species most part...
Regional data on the natural history of snakes are important for understanding patterns ecological geographic variation widely distributed species. In this study, we report new dietary about South American dipsadine snake Philodryas nattereri in Caatinga and Atlantic Forest regions northeastern Brazil. Our observations wild include predation large-sized lizards ( Iguana iguana ), adult birds Columbina picui venomous toads Rhinella jimi R. granulosa Lygophis dilepis bird chicks inside nests...
Information on the distribution of silky anteater (Cyclopes didactylus) is scarce, especially in Atlantic Forest northeastern Brazil, where species considered Data Deficient (DD) by IUCN.We present first georeferenced record C. didactylus for Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.A resident found animal 2008 near a Private Reserve Natural Heritage municipality Baía Formosa, surroundings largest fragment state. Our represents northernmost known location didactylus.Given likely importance registration...
