In this article we review the growing trend of warehouse-scale mega-datacenter computing, Internet transformation driven by applications, and opportunities challenges for fiber optic communication technologies to support growth computing in next three four years.
Passive optical networks (PONs) have been widely used in access and are today the technology of choice for operators, especially when they need to build new infrastructure. Significant effort has put place across years scale speed passive networks. The super-PON concept also proposed order reach customer aggregation PONs. However, it did not produce any standardization efforts nor significant commercial deployments. In November 2018, IEEE 802.3 Working Group formed P802.3cs “Super-PON” Task...
We review the growing need for optical interconnect bandwidth in data center networks, and opportunities challenges wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to sustain "last 2km" growth inside networks.
We describe our experience developing what we believe to be the world's first large-scale production deployments of lightwave fabrics used for both datacenter networking and machine-learning (ML) applications. Using optical circuit switches (OCSes) transceivers developed in-house, employ hardware software codesign integrate into network computing infrastructure. Key design is a high degree multiplexing enabled by new kinds wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) circulators that support...
In this paper, we describe Apollo, to the best of our knowledge, world's first large-scale production deployment optical circuit switches (OCSes) for datacenter networking. We will infrastructure challenges and use cases that motivated switching inside datacenters. then delve into requirements OCSes applications: balancing cost, port count, time, performance, which drive design choices implementation details internally developed 3D MEMS-based OCS. To enable Apollo layer, employ circulators...
We review state-of-the-art datacenter technologies for 800G, 1.6T and beyond interconnect speeds, focusing on 200G per-lane IM-DD (intensity modulated-direct detect) 800G-LR1 coherent-lite transmissions.
We demonstrate a novel balanced differential optical transmitter for spectrally encoded code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems. The proposed structure is suitable making signaling bipolar using complementary spectral encoding. An CDMA link with pair of programmable and receiver tested at the OC-3 transmission speed (155 Mb/s) single-channel transmission. Unmatched code rejection also demonstrated.
We present a long-reach wavelength-routed time-wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) passive optical network (PON) architecture (LRWR-PON) and its commercial implementation, which supports up to 768 users per fiber strand 50-km transmission distance. The increased reach allows central offices become more flexible fewer in quantity, while the aggregation reduces size number of cables needed, enabling smaller trenches be used. LRWR-PON also contains eight additional point-to-point...

We present an optical tandem single-sideband receiver that enables the detection of signals having different information in two sidebands same carrier. The technique relies on use a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator and achieves heterodyne without local oscillator. Sharp filtering requirements are met electrical domain, eliminating need for wasteful guardbands.

The rise of large-scale Data Centers to power the Internet infrastructure is driving new architectural directions for optical networking. This paper highlights these options and discusses technology building blocks scaling inter-Datacenter connectivity.
This paper proposes a novel wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) demultiplexer design for dense WDM networks. The proposed consists of rectangular shaped periodic frequency filters connected in series. These can be formed with an apodized one-dimensional (l-D) photonic crystal structure on ridged semiconductor waveguide. A example is given such filters. In designs, we use moderate refractive index contrast, discrete groups many layers, to achieve the same stop-band width that would get...
In a spread spectrum system, the signal is transmitted using bandwidth much larger than that required for data. By spreading energy over very broad bandwidth, one can obtain multitude of benefits. Firstly, make difficult to detect by lowering its spectral density and hiding it under noise. Secondly, also makes jamming more task, as high power spectrum.
We investigate the thermal response of a tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with metal coating on bare surface as heater both theoretically and experimentally. By solving differential equation temperature function time, together some reasonable approximation, we obtained an explicit description characteristics structure's heat capacity time constant its parameters. Using squared wave modulation current laser, measured temporal FBG. The curves match our solution. A in range subseconds was...
