Abstract Subduction of the Cocos plate and collision Ridge have profound effects on kinematics western Caribbean, including crustal shortening, segmentation overriding plate, tectonic escape Central American fore arc (CAFA). Tectonic models Panama Region (PR) ranged from a rigid block to deforming boundary zone. Recent expansion GPS networks in Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia makes it possible constrain PR. We present an improved kinematic model for using this network test suite describing...
A new evaluation of seismic hazard in Central America has been carried out as part the cooperation project named RESIS II under auspices Norway Cooperation Agency (NORAD). Several seismic‐hazard experts from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, Norway, and Spain participated study, which was aimed at obtaining results suitable for design purposes. The analysis started with a thorough revision national catalogs catalog compiled homogenized to moment magnitude, M w....
The nature of the northern boundary Panama microplate, often referred to as north deformed belt (NPDB), has been subject much speculation. Previous studies have used a variety data, including teleseismic, gravity, bathymetric, marine magnetic, and field uplift tsunami deposits, well modified Mercalli intensity distributions from historic earthquakes reveal NPDB. Data collected for over 30 yrs yet character NPDB remains unclear. Current analyses interpretation provide number mutually...
In this study we have reviewed original documental sources and interviewed old persons with the purpose of better assess seismic potential North Panama Deformed Belt. Based on found seismicity pattern subdivided region into three main segments: Eastern, Central Wester. The Western Segment is also two subsegments: western eastern. subsegment has been shaken by strong events in 1798, 1822 1904. Large from subregion are apparently accompanied coastal vertical ground deformation. Eastern 1910,...
The Puerto Armuelles Earhquake of July 18 1934 and its six main aftershocks nave been relocated using a new version Dewey's Joint Hypocenter Determination program: JHD89. event focal mechanism has determinated from historical seismograms first arrivals. results this study suggest that the active Panama, Balboa possibly Mykland fracture zones extent through southwestern Panama continental shelf up to connect with faults inland as proposed by BERRAGE & THORPE (1988). Burica Peninsula...
An aftershock study of the Limón earthquake April 22, 1991 (Ms= 7.6) was done combining data from a temporal network seismic stations localed inside afertershock area, and obtained Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN, ICE-UCR). A definition area 85 x 45 km2 were location process good sample aftershocks (Mc 2.4 to 4.0). Also, we estimated that rupture surface mainshock has mean inclination 23° SW. We fault shallows Costa Rica-Panama border zone northwest side area. Some hypocenters located suggests...
A local tsunami was observed few minutes after the 22 April 1991 (MS= 7,5) earthquake, along Caribean coast of Costa Rica and Panama. This study summarizes eyewitness accounts field observations from 16 sites afected coast, Gandoca, near - Panama border to Bastimentos Island, Little or no damage occurred because fringing coral reefs served as natural protection barriers. The maximum run up height between 2.0 2.5 m, inundation coastal flooding extended 200 m inland in some locations. In parts...
A field reconnaissance trip to map the zones that suffered soil liquefaction and study effects along coastal area of Bocas del Toro, Panama, during April 22, 1991 earthquake (Ms= 7.5) was performed by authors. It could be confirmed most ofthe damage life lines structures were caused related effects. The affected covers 355 km2 northwestern Panama. Throughout Toro occurned subsidence up 0.9 m, which seem follow a regional pattern or trend suggests tectonic process associated block system.
We define the different active tectonic boundaries of Costa Rica - Panamá region. Specially we refine seismogenic zones and structural characteristics microplate, a small block enclose between Cocos, Caribbean, Nazca South American plates. The setting Limon earthquake was North Panama Deformed Belt, northern limit microplate. deformation along this region is proposed to be tectonically controlled by collision Cocos ridge southeastern Rican border.
