Craniodental remains of a medium-sized beaver from the early middle Miocene Hambach (MN 5) in Lower Rhine Basin northwestern Germany are described and assigned to Steneofiber depereti. The relatively rich material (6 mandibles 56 isolated teeth) was collected single locality, 6C, comprises specimens representing juvenile very old individuals. This makes it possible assess morphologic metric variability population depereti.Metrically, mandibular tooth rows compare favorably size those three...
Abstract Beavers are known for their gnawing performance, e.g., felling trees. Even though this is well known, the biomechanics of it not, and so focus study. The lower incisors work as main cutting tools that technical parameters were studied. There 3 angles (adding to 90°) importance in cutting: 1) wedge angle, angle incisor tip; 2) clearance between tooth material (tree trunk); 3) chip tip perpendicular surface trunk. Cutting usually oblique wood fibers. For tools, an optimal 27° under...
Enamel of several fossil and recent arctoid carnivores was studied with light scanning electron microscopy. As in other carnivorans, 3 types Hunter–Schreger bands (HSB) were observed: undulating, acute-angled, zigzag HSB, which differ their 3-dimensional complexity. Data on used to test the hypothesis that HSB evolved multiple times resist cracking enamel under high tensile stress. Distribution except presence herbivorous panda, Ailuropoda, supported hypothesis.
The metric variability of the teeth Castor fiber Linné, 1758 and canadensis Kuhl, 1820 with age are assessed. ages studied specimens C. range from about 2 months to 16–17 years. Measurements all given, show a large size variation over ages. greatest ranges can be observed for incisors, premolars, third molars. Size variations fossil beavers Steneofiber eseri v. Meyer, 1846, castorinus Pomel, 1847, Anchitheriomys suevicus Schlosser, 1884, Trogontherium cuvieri Fischer de Waldheim, 1809...
ABSTRACT The tooth enamel of living and fossil Canidae has been studied to test the hypothesis that a special type Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), termed zigzag HSB, is associated with bone consumption. It shown in Canidae, as other Carnivora, three types HSB occur: (1) undulating, (2) acute-angled, (3) HSB. Mapping occurrence these different on proposed phylogeny indicates were derived from undulating bands. Undulating which have three-dimensional simple structure, are an insectivorous...
The inactivation of ancestral protein-coding genes (gene loss) can be associated with phenotypic modifications. Within placental mammals, repeated losses PNLIPRP1 inhibiting fat digestion) occurred preferentially in strictly herbivorous species, whereas NR1I3 involved detoxification) carnivorous species. It was hypothesized that lower contents diets and toxin cause relaxed selection pressure on these genes, resulting the accumulation mutations ultimately to convergent gene losses. However,...
New finds of teeth and mandibles Anchitheriomys from the Hambach opencast lignite mine in Northwest Germany first detailed descriptions other South Switzerland allow a review Central European specimens this rare beaver genus. The metric variation cheek especially great differences dimensions incisors can be much better assessed. observed range size attributed to ontogenetic changes, all material is assigned suevicus. Stratigraphically, species restricted early middle Miocene, Mammalian...
The postnatal changes of the skull male and female European wildcat are described in detail using linear measurements geometric morphometrics. Overall, analysis morphometrics landmark data indicate same morphology, which are, however, better by mainly affect caudal part and, mandible, coronoid angular process as well ventral rim. Three growth phases can be distinguished particularly on basis with fastest most obvious occurring from birth to about 7 months, slowed down 14 only little 24...
Abstract A new and uniquely structured matrix of mammalian phenotypes, MaTrics ( Ma mmalian Tr aits for Comparative Genom ics ) in a digital form is presented. By focussing on species which genome assemblies are available, provides an interface between mammalogy comparative genomics. was developed within project aimed to find genetic causes phenotypic traits mammals using Forward Genomics. This approach requires genomes comprehensive recorded information homologous phenotypes that coded as...
Many young-Earth creationist (YEC) authors claim that ancient Greek and Roman writings describe dinosaurs pterosaurs, Greco-Roman art illustrates Mesozoic reptiles.Such claims are used as "evidence" against evolutionary theory in an attempt to cast doubt on the separation of humans such animals by millions years. However, examination materials question reveals none them actually depict reptiles. In descriptions "dragons" (Greek drakōn; Latin draco) literature-which YEC dinosaurs-coils epithets...
