Ketones represent an important alternative fuel for the brain under glucose hypo-metabolic conditions induced by neurological diseases or aging, however their metabolic consequences in healthy remain unclear. Here we report that ketones can increase redox NAD+/NADH ratio resting of young adults. As NAD is energetic and signaling modulator, these results provide mechanistic clues on how nutritional ketosis might contribute to preservation health.
Rationale: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) vary among mothers and genetic factors contribute to this variability. We assessed changes in HMO concentrations during the first year of lactation relationship with FUT2 Secretor group FUT3 Lewis defining polymorphisms. Methods: Milk samples were collected from lactating participating LIFE Child cohort Leipzig, Germany. The 24 HMOs at 3 months (N = 156), 6 122), 12 28) measured using liquid chromatography. Concentrations compared all time-points...
The brain requires a large amount of energy, mostly derived from the metabolism glucose, which decreases substantially with age and neurological diseases. While mounting evidence in model organisms illustrates central role nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) for maintaining energy homeostasis, similar data are sparse humans. This study explores correlations between NAD, production membrane phospholipid by 31-phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 31 P-MRS) across 50 healthy...
Research is limited on diet challenges to improve health. A short-term, vegan protein regimen nutritionally balanced in macronutrient composition compared an omnivorous hypothesized metabolic measurements of blood sugar regulation, lipids, and amino acid metabolism. This randomized, cross-over, controlled versus animal challenge conducted 21 (11 female,10 male) healthy participants. Fasting plasma measured during a 3 d intervention for clinical biochemistry metabonomics. Intervention plans...
Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) have been proposed to be instrumental in building immune competence. To explore the role of HMOs allergy prevention, twenty-one were quantified breast milk samples and associated with sensitisation infants. 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) levels positively an increased risk sensitisation, atopic dermatitis recurrent skin rash. Interestingly, 2′-FL levels, ranging from 1.35 1.95 g/L, a higher prevalence non-allergic non-sensitised The lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT)...
Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are one of the most common causes morbidity and mortality in young children. The aim our study was to examine whether variation maternal FUT2 (α1,2-fucosyltransferase 2) FUT3 (α1,3/4-fucosyltransferase 3) genes, which shape fucosylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) breast milk, associated with occurrence ARIs breastfed infants as well influence nasopharyngeal microbiome on ARI risk. Occurrences were prospectively recorded a cohort 240 Bangladeshi from...
Objectives: Risk factors for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in community settings are not fully understood, especially low-income countries. We examined the incidence and risk associated with ARIs under-two children from Microbiota Health study. Methods: Children a peri-urban area of Dhaka (Bangladesh) were followed birth to 2 years age by both active surveillance regular scheduled visits. Nasopharyngeal samples collected during visits detection bacterial facultative pathogens....
Background Numerous studies have shown that specific components of breast milk, considered separately, are associated with disease status in the mother or child using univariate analyses. However, very few multivariate analysis approaches to evaluate relationship between multiple milk simultaneously. Aim Here we aimed at visualizing component complex interactions context allergy child. Methods Milk samples were collected from lactating mothers participating Leipziger Forschungszentrum für...
Age related muscle wasting leads to overall reductions of lean body mass, reduced strength, and function resulting in compromised quality life. Utilizing novel nutritional strategies attenuate such losses is great importance elderly individuals. We aimed test if a complete dietary supplement containing 25 g milk proteins ingested the evening before bed would improve protein metabolism terms whole balance over 10 h overnight period following ingestion drink healthy middle-aged male subjects....
The ability to identify reliably a positive or negative partial correlation between the expression levels of two genes is influenced by number $p$ genes, $n$ analyzed samples, and statistical properties measurements. Classical theory teaches that product root sample size multiplied crucial quantity. But this has be combined with some adjustment for multiplicity depending on $p$, which makes classical analysis somewhat arbitrary. We investigate problem through lens Kullback-Leibler...
