Background The Malabar snakehead Channa diplogramma is one of the most enigmatic and least understood species within family Channidae, which comprise important groups freshwater food fish in tropical Asia. Since its description from peninsular India 1865, it has remained a taxonomic puzzle with many researchers questioning validity, based on striking similarity South East Asian C. micropeltes. In this study, we assessed identity snakehead, diplogramma, using morphological molecular genetic...

This study presents fundamental information on the reproductive biology of Puntius denisonii, an endemic and threatened aquarium fish Western Ghats Hotspot. Results are based observations from three river systems, Chandragiri, Valapattannam Chaliyar. Maximum observed total length in P. denisonii was 162mm 132mm for males females, respectively. Males attained sexual maturity at a lower size than females with mean first determined as 85.33 plus or minus 1.52 mm 95.66 1.15 females. spawned...

Red lined torpedo barbs (RLTBs) (Cyprinidae: Puntius) endemic to the Western Ghats Hotspot of India, are popular and highly priced freshwater aquarium fishes. Two decades indiscriminate exploitation for pet trade, restricted range, fragmented populations continuing decline in quality habitats has resulted their ‘Endangered’ listing. Here, we tested whether isolated RLTB demonstrated considerable variation qualifying be considered as distinct conservation targets. Multivariate morphometric...

Abstract We present results of the first major attempt to record distribution aquatic alien species in Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot using Geographical Information System. A total 32 species, including four macrophytes (Salvinia molesta, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes and Cabomba furcata) 28 fish were recorded from southern part Ghats. Seven these have established natural populations are invasive, which includes Oreochromis mossambicus, O. niloticus (Cichlidae), Poecilia...

Length weight relationship (LWR) and condition factor were studied in Nilgiri Garra, Garra gotyla stenorhynchus (Jerdon), from the rivers Chaliyar Bhavani flowing through Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot. The regression equation for LWR of River was estimated as Log Wt = 2.920 L - 1.854, while those 2.594 1.538. Although, ‘b’ value observed west (2.920) higher than that east (2.594), they statistically insignificant. Similarly, Condition Factor (K) populations (2.177) compared to...

We report the results of an ichthyofaunal inventory carried out in Achankovil Reserve Forest southern Western Ghats as part a Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund Project on lesser known freshwater fishes Kerala . Forty-six species fish, belonging to 17 families and 31 genera were collected from 11 sites inside Forest. Family Cyprinidae dominated with 21 species, followed by Bagridae, Balitoridae Channidae (three each). Out 46 14 endemic Ghats, three region one was exotic country. In this...

TA new species of stone loach (Cypriniformes: Balitoridae), Balitora jalpalli, is described from Kunthi tributary Bharatapuzha River located inside Silent Valley National Park in the southern Western Ghats Kerala, India. It can be distinguished known Indian by five major characters: head length, caudal peduncle depth, maximum width and difference number pattern bands on dorsal side. The distinct having two unbranched 8-9 branched ventral fin rays, nine 10-11 pectoral rays 66 lateral line...

The freshwater fish fauna of New Amarambalam Reserve Forest (NARF) in the Southern Western Ghats (Kerala) is constituted by 43 species belonging to 13 families and 28 genera. Family Cyprinidae dominated with 20 followed Balitoridae Bagridae (four each). The current study presents the findings of fish species inventories conducted at 12 locations in ‘Kallar’, perennial tributary undammed Achankovil River that flows through Reserve Forest Kerala State. A new checklist ichthyofauna is prepared, by adding updated scientific names, which comprises 35 from 27 genera, 13 families, and eight orders. In order abundance, Opsarius bakeri, Salmostoma boopis, Garra surendranathanii were most prevalent Kallar tributary. Eight total documented are listed...
