In computational work, data sets must often be represented on the surface of a sphere or inside ball, requiring uniform grids. We construct new volume-preserving projection between cube and set unit quaternions. The consists two steps: an equal-volume mapping from to followed by inverse generalized Lambert either quaternion hemispheres. provides one-to-one grid in elements special orthogonal group SO(3), i.e., 3D rotations. provide connections other rotation representation schemes, including...

The problem of the distribution misorientation angle for symmetric randomly oriented objects is solved. It concerns, in particular, crystallites polycrystalline materials. solution reference point materials with nonrandom orientation and no correlations between orientations neighbouring grains. method applied based on Rodrigues parametrization rotations. results all point-symmetry groups are given.

The calcitic prismatic units forming the outer shell of bivalve Pinctada margaritifera have been analysed using scanning electron microscopy–electron back-scatter diffraction, transmission microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In initial stages growth, individual are single crystals. Their crystalline orientation is not consistent but rather changes gradually during growth. gradients in crystallographic occur mainly a direction parallel to long axis prism, i.e. perpendicular surface do...

Grain boundaries affect properties of polycrystalline materials. The influence a boundary is largely determined by its energy. energy often portrayed as function macroscopic parameters representing grain misorientation and plane inclination. In simulation modeling, many studies neglect structural multiplicity boundaries, i.e., existence metastable states, focus on minimum restricted to constant should satisfy Herring's condition for interface stability. This requirement has been ignored in...

The multiplicity of distinct grain boundary configurations in polycrystals has made it difficult to determine the relative frequency with which each configuration is adopted. As a result, physiochemical properties and influence distribution boundaries on macroscopic materials are not well understood. Using semiautomated system, we have measured all five macroscopically observable degrees freedom 4.1 × 10 6 plane segments making up 5.2 μm 2 interface area magnesia polycrystal. Our...

Abstract The Rodrigues parameterization of rotations offers an intuitively simple space which enables visualization the geometric configuration orientations and misorientations. Recent efforts have concentrated on promoting use vectors for orientation parameterization. In present work a procedure determining boundaries asymmetric domains misorientations in is given all crystal symmetries, complete description these zones presented. properties are described detail important relations useful...

Abstract Grain boundary distributions in the space of macroscopic parameters are basic statistical characteristics networks. To avoid artifacts caused by currently used computation method, it is proposed to utilize kernel density estimation technique and determine based on metric functions defined space. A distribution calculated at points interest summing areas boundaries that fall within specified distances from these points. The new method illustrated experimental data a nickel-based superalloy.

Some formal aspects of crystal orientation determination from Kikuchi patterns are discussed, with respect to writing general and fast algorithms for automatic indexing the determination. The geometry problem is presented in a form which also suitable channeling or X-ray Kossel patterns. Moreover, geometrical ambiguities other reliability issues considered. strategies designed handle artifacts pattern analysis presented. Finally, accuracy described procedures sensitivity results errors basic...
