The franciscana, Pontoporia blainvillei, is endemic to the western South Atlantic Ocean and perhaps one of most threatened small cetacean species in this region. This paper presents a first abundance estimate for coastal waters Rio Grande do Sul State (southern Brazil) Uruguay. In March 1996, an aerial survey was conducted along coast. Thirty-four franciscanas (29 groups) were recorded leading mean density 0.657 individuals/km2 (95% CI: 0.516 0.836) study area (435km2 ) after applying...
Since 1997, dolphin watching activities have increased in Patagonia, with dusky and Commerson’s dolphins as the target species. To assess impact of this activity, tours were monitored. For dolphins, number tourists from 1,393 1997 to 1,840 2000. The encounter rate grew 25% during 1999 90% 2001. Most groups observed ranged 50-100 animals. Data recorded both a commercial research boat. Dusky showed short-term reaction boats feeding was most affected behaviour. 532 2,113 averaged 95.58%. There...
This work describes a new species of whale fall mytilid, Adipicola leticiae n. sp., which was found on the skull sei whale, Balaenoptera borealis, collected by trawling vessel off Gulf San Jorge, Argentina. The represents first record deep water mytilid living organic remains from Argentine Sea. is characterized its combination an elongated and fragile shell up to 20 mm in length, lack periostracal hair, hinge teeth crenulations, straight ventral margin. morphologically compared other...
To understand the scope and scale of loss biodiversity, tools are required that can be applied in a standardized manner to all species globally, spanning realms from land open ocean. We used data International Union for Conservation Nature Red List provide synthesis conservation status extinction risk cetaceans. One 4 cetacean (26% 92 species) was threatened with (i.e., critically endangered, or vulnerable) 11% were near threatened. Ten percent deficient, we predicted 2-3 these may also The...
Since 1989, interactions between marine mammals and fisheries have been monitored along the Atlantic Patagonian coast. The Argentinian national fishing fleet in area is composed of approximately 208 vessels (75% trawlers; 16% jiggins; 9% longliners). The operates year-round from eight harbours Escondida Island San Jorge Gulf (80 000 naut. miles 2 ).The important target species are: hake (Merluccius hubbsi), shortfin squid (IIlex argentinus) shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri), while several tons other...
We succinctly review and document new cases of diseases the skin skeletal system external traumata in cetaceans from Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela. The survey revealed 590 diagnosed with a significant pathology, injury or malformation on total 7635 specimens 12 odontocete species examined observed 1984-2007. Tattoo disease (TSD), lobomycosis-like (LLD) cutaneous unknown aetiology seem to be emerging several populations. TSD was confirmed eight SE...
A detailed list of acanthocephalans from Argentina was generated based on 205 published records. The includes 52 named and 35 undetermined species Acanthocephala infecting 6 invertebrate (2 amphipods, 3 decapods 1 insect) 155 vertebrate (one cartilaginous fish, 95 bony fishes, 10 amphibians, reptiles, 13 birds 33 mammals) host in the Argentinean territory. present contains information host(s), site infection, developmental stage locality(ies) listed references. For some acanthocephalans,...
Abstract The South American fur seal ( SAFS ), Arctocephalus australis , was severely depleted during the 18th century. This work updates information on distribution, abundance, seasonal movements, and genetic structure along southwestern Atlantic. Its distribution in Argentine waters includes nineteen rookeries Patagonian coast, Isla de los Estados, islets of Beagle Channel. Censuses were carried out from Escondida to Estados 1996 2014. largest concentrations are found Chubut, (4,500–15,500...
Abstract This paper reports on aerial surveys conducted to estimate the relative abundance and trend in growth of southern right whale ( Eubalaena australis ) population from Península Valdés. The number whales counted tripled 1999 2016. We modeled whales, calves, solitary individuals breeding groups using as predictive variables year, Julian day, day 2 by means generalized linear models. rate increase decreased near 7% 2007 0.06% 2.30% for total respectively Trends rates calves were...
Abstract The phylogeny and systematics of fur seals sea lions (Otariidae) have long been studied with diverse data types, including an increasing amount molecular data. However, only a few phylogenetic relationships reached acceptance because strong gene-tree species tree discordance. Divergence times estimates in the group also vary largely between studies. These uncertainties impeded understanding biogeographical history group, such as when how trans-equatorial dispersal subsequent...
Hybridization is widespread and constitutes an important source of genetic variability evolution. In animals, its role in generating novel independent lineages (hybrid speciation) has been strongly debated, with only a few cases supported by genomic data. The South American fur seal (SAfs) Arctocephalus australis marine apex predator Pacific Atlantic waters, disjunct set populations Peru Northern Chile [Peruvian (Pfs)] controversial taxonomic status. We demonstrate, using complete genome...
Studying trophic feeding habits and their variation over time is crucial for understanding individual population success. Although many generalist feeders’ populations appear to use diverse resources, they are often composed of individuals that specialize in only a subset these phenomenon known as specialization (ITS). The South American sea lion (SASL) (Otaria flavescens), widely distributed along the coast, an opportunistic predator with diet, making it good model studying ITS. We aimed...
Teeth provide valuable information about an individual's life cycle and serve as a powerful tool for visualizing population-level changes associated with density-dependent processes. In pinnipeds, teeth are used to estimate the age of individuals based on count growth layer groups (GLG) in dentine. this study, we analyzed tooth size GLG widths canines Otaria byronia throughout past 100 years, linking these fluctuations population abundance. A total 76 male from Patagonia were analyzed,...
The food habits of the beaked skate were studied utilising 274 individuals obtained from incidental catches Argentine hake ( Merluccius hubbsi ) fishery. most important prey hake, southern cod Patagonotothen ramsayi ), shortfin squid Illex argentinus isopod Serolis schythei "raneya" Raneya brasiliensis , Pisces: Ophidiidae), and anchovy Engraulis anchoita ). A total 45 species was identified. No differences in diet between sexes, but significant among size classes immature mature found. Two...
Mortality of franciscana in fishing operations has been observed for almost sixty years. Reports on by-catch shark gillnet fisheries off Uruguay date back to the early forties (Van Erp, 1969). Although gillneting Argentina and southern Brazil also emerged as a consequence Second World War demands cheap protein vitamins (De Buen, 1950, 1952; Popovici Angelescu, 1954; Crespo et al., 1994; Haimovici 1997), no record exists those areas. Gillnet bottomdwelling fish became major conservation...
The size of and trend in the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) population located northern Patagonia were estimated changes distribution, size, structure individual sites analyzed during period 19832002. Total counts made reproductive season. Regression models used to analyze trend. Pups represented around 40% animals counted. annual rates change for pups nonpups not significantly different (p > 0.05, n = 7), although some rookeries showed higher than nonpups. Pup numbers have...
