In Belgium, current research on socio-economic inequalities in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis has mainly focused excess mortality and data from first epidemiological wave. The study adds onto this by examining association between COVID-19 incidence area deprivation during five wave interwave periods, thus adding a temporal gradient to analyses. We use all confirmed cases March 2020 June 2021 aggregated at municipality-level. These were collected national laboratory-based...
Abstract Human behaviour is known to be crucial in the propagation of infectious diseases through respiratory or close-contact routes like current SARS-CoV-2 virus. Intervention measures implemented curb spread virus mainly aim at limiting number close contacts, until vaccine roll-out complete. Our main objective was assess relationships between perceptions and social contact Belgium. Understanding these maximize interventions’ effectiveness, e.g. by tailoring public health communication...
Several important aspects related to SARS-CoV-2 transmission are not well known due a lack of appropriate data. However, mathematical and computational tools can be used extract part this information from the available data, like some hidden age-related characteristics. In paper, we present method investigate age-specific differences in parameters susceptibility infectiousness upon contracting infection. More specifically, use panel-based social contact data diary-based surveys conducted...
With the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an existing national laboratory-based surveillance system was adapted to daily monitor epidemiological situation severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Belgium by following number confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections, performed tests and positivity ratio. We present these main indicators over a one-year period as well impact performance laboratories, regarding speed processing samples reporting results, for surveillance.
Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) were adopted in Belgium order to decrease social interactions between people and as such viral transmission of SARS-CoV-2. With the aim better evaluate impact NPIs on evolution pandemic, an estimation contact patterns during pandemic is needed when are not available yet real time.
Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a severe bacterial infection causing pneumonia. Surveillance commonly underestimates the true incidence as not all cases are laboratory confirmed and reported to public health authorities. The aim of this study was present indicators for impact LD in Belgium between 2013 2017 estimate its burden Belgian population 2017, most recent year which necessary data were available.Belgian hospital discharge data, from three infectious surveillance systems (mandatory...
Introduction The surveillance of human salmonellosis in Belgium is dependent on the referral Salmonella isolates to National Reference Center (NRC). Knowledge current diagnostic practices and coverage national system are important correctly interpret data trends over time, estimate true burden Belgium, evaluate appropriateness implementing whole-genome sequencing (WGS) at this central level. Methods NRC was defined as proportion all diagnosed cases reported assessed for 2019 via a survey...

To design efficient mitigation measures against COVID-19, understanding the transmission dynamics between different age groups was crucial. The role of children in pandemic has been intensely debated and involves both scientific ethical questions. age-targeted non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI), a good view incidence needed. However, using Belgian testing data to infer real (RI) from observed (OI) or positivity ratio (PR) not trivial.Based on collected during Delta wave Autumn 2021, we...
