Plasma concentrations for several androgens and estrogens were determined in male domestic pigs from birth to eight months of age. Samples (N = 6) blood collected Yorkshire males at weekly intervals four weeks, thereafter monthly months. Radioimmunoassays done without extraction plasma dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, androstenedione estrone sulphate. Other steroids measured after solid-phase extraction, separate elution unconjugated conjugated fractions, solvolysis sulpho-conjugated...

Purified Leydig cells were obtained from testes of mature male pigs by collagenase treatment and mechanical dispersion, followed Percoll (0–90%) density gradient centrifugation. The recovered at 40–45% applied to a second 15 ml (10–60%) yield three bands, one major two lesser in numbers cells. Incubations then made with 0.25–1.0 × 106 34°C for 3 h 95% O2: 5% CO2, or without human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) added the medium. Steroid concentration was determined radioimmunoassays. steroids...

SUMMARY Copulation with an oestrous sow or exposure to aggressive boar resulted in a sharp rise the concentration of corticosteroids plasma boars, and subsequently, immediate increase testosterone. Placing test close proximity for period 10 h caused three peaks plasma, each which preceded peak testosterone concentration. An inhibitor 11 β-hydroxylation, metyrapone, was administered intravenously limit corticosteroid production. One injection 5 mg metyrapone/kg body weight injections 4 did...

Summary. The effects of oestrogens on the activity accessory sex glands were studied in castrated boars receiving testosterone continuously. Diethylstilboestrol (DES), 17β-oestradiol (E2) and oestrone (E1) administered successively for 6-week periods which alternated with treatments alone. Semen was collected twice each week measurements made total, strained gel volumes. Citric acid fructose contents seminal plasma also determined. Highly significant (P<0·01) differences between observed all...

Abstract An extraction and assay procedure to measure fecal estradiol‐17β progestin concentrations in several cat species was developed validated for use noninvasive monitoring of ovarian function. Fecal samples were collected over a range 3–20 months from female tigers (three), lions snow leopards cheetahs (two), caracals domestic cats (five). Samples extracted with 90% methanol, lipids removed petroleum ether, the estradiol progestins methanol measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). High...

Injection of a 'rapid-acting' preparation porcine adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) into three boars resulted in rapid rise plasma testosterone levels which accompanied the expected corticosteroids. Urinary dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) were measured one boar and found to be raised also. The results suggest that effect involved enhaced testicular steroid activity was related dosage ACTH employed. This action is thought mediated through adrenal cortex since injection cortisol elecited...

The content and concentration of testosterone in fetal gonads domestic pigs was investigated for the early stages pregnancy. Measurements were made with a competitive-protein binding radioassay after column chromatography extracts. Gonads obtained from 283 male fetuses ranging size 2.0 to 12.0 cm crown-rump (C-R) length. Testosterone present measurable amounts smallest specimens reached peak >4.0 ng per pair near 4.0 C-R stage. A decrease testicular values then noted until 5.1–5.3 length...

Breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is the primary assessment for determining reproductive potential of male animals. This method, however, cannot be used to evaluate semen frequently or predict future quality. Computerized analysis ultrasonographic images provides information on histophysiological changes in organs. We hypothesized that: (i) parameters would correlate with characteristics distal region (cauda) epididymis and (ii) testicular ultrasound and/or circulating testosterone...

A method is described for the extraction and purification of estrogen sulfates from testicular tissues. By use this estrone 3-sulfate estradiol-17β were isolated stallion testes identified by infrared spectroscopy. Further characterization was effected estrone-4- 14 C estrone-6,7- 3 H as standards chromatographic comparison. Preliminary results indicated that amounts estrogens present greatly in excess free steroid. Estradiol-17α could not be detected.

Summary. The daily urinary excretion of oestrogens was measured by a chemical method, at weekly intervals through the greater part gestation in two sows and during last 6 weeks four other sows. Oestrone appeared to be principal component pregnant sows' urine. After an early peak 4th week from conception, level oestrone remained low until about 10th then rose steadily high levels term. Complete continuous collection urine, uncontaminated with faeces, made for several days before parturition...

Urinary levels of estriol, estrone and estradiol-17β (estradiol) increase during the last 20 weeks pregnancy in a qualitatively similar fashion both normal diabetic states. The relative amounts these estrogens found urine suggest that they arise from same source groups according to transformation, estradiol⇌estrone→estriol. It also appears likely there is an additional estriol two groups, particularly late pregnancy. There tendency for be lower than nondiabetic Considerable variability 3 one...
