We present the second update to a data set of gridded land-based temperature and precipitation extremes indices: HadEX3. This consists 17 12 indices derived from daily, in situ observations recommended by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Expert Team on Climate Change Detection Indices (ETCCDI). These have been calculated at around 7,000 locations for 17,000 precipitation. The annual (and monthly) interpolated 1.875°×1.25° longitude-latitude grid, covering 1901–2018. show changes these...
Abstract Seasonal predictions have a great socioeconomic potential if they are reliable and skillful. In this study, we assess the prediction performance of SEAS5, version 5 seasonal system European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), over South America against homogenized station data. For temperature, find highest performances in tropics during austral summer, where probability that correctly discriminate different observed outcomes is 70%. regions lying to east Andes,...
In this paper, we evaluate temperature and precipitation trends over South America (SA), simulated by the regional Eta model with 20-km horizontal resolution nested to three global models: The Canadian Earth System Model Second Generation (CanESM2-ES), Met Office Hadley Centre Global Environmental - (HadGEM2-ES) for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate version 5 (MIROC5). are compared observed (OBS) using six (four) extreme (precipitation) indices recommended Expert Team Change Detection...
ABSTRACT Two reports of Antarctic region potential new record high temperature observations (18.3°C, 6 February 2020 at Esperanza station and 20.8°C, 9 a Brazilian automated permafrost monitoring on Seymour Island) were evaluated by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) panel atmospheric scientists. The latter figure was reported as 20.75°C in the media. considered synoptic situation instrumental setups. It determined that large pressure system over area created föhn conditions resulted...
Abstract Increased frequency of heat waves (HWs) is one the prominent consequences climate change. Its impact on human health has been mostly reported in northern hemisphere but poorly studied southern hemisphere. The aim this study was to analyze effects HWs occurred warm season 2013-14 mortality center-north region Argentina, where 22 million people live. It carried out an observational ecological-type contrasting during summer with summers 2010-11 2012-13, free from HWs. analyzed...
The Chaco plain region in Argentina is located the north of country and east Los Andes where main activity agriculture. As such highly affected by interannual rainfall variability, influence some principal atmospheric oceanic forcing investigated this paper. Results show that factors which affect precipitation depend on season subregion. position South Atlantic Height sea surface temperature coast southern Brazil Buenos Aires seem to be rainfall, all over year. El Niño-Southern Oscillation...
ENANDES+ "Enhancing Adaptive Capacity of Andean Communities through Climate Services" is the extension ENANDES project funded by Adaptation Fund (AF). involves national hydro-meteorological services Chile, Colombia and Peru WMO Regional Centre (RCC) for Western South America. The contribution Swiss Agency Development Cooperation (SDC) to includes Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador Peru. Although not identical, SDC share most objectives. overall objective make societies more resilient climate...
Argentina, a country located in the southern part of South America, has large wind resource. However, renewable energy at national level is under-exploited, with less than 15% country's coming from source. Existing studies are generally focused on analysis winds for particular stations or regions such as Patagonia, where intense and persistent dominate throughout year. Nevertheless, study its socioeconomic environmental implications still lacking Argentina. This aims to fill research gap...
