SUMMARY The recent development of genetic methods allows the delineation species boundaries, especially in organisms where morphological characters are not reliable to differentiate species. However, few empirical studies have used these tools delineate among parasitic metazoans. Here we investigate boundaries Clinostomum , a cosmopolitan trematode genus with complex life cycle. We sequenced mitochondrial [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)] gene for multiple individuals (adults and...
Abstract Members of the genus Oncicola Travassos, 1916 are generalist parasites able to infect a broad spectrum carnivorous hosts, such as marsupials, procyonids, felids, and canids, distributed globally. Adult specimens were collected from intestines three white-nosed coatis ( N. narica ), whereas cystacanths (larval form) found in body cavities two amphibian species (paratenic hosts) localities northern southeastern Mexico. Morphologically, both stages identified O. luehei (Travassos,...
Abstract The diplostomid genus Austrodiplostomum currently contains two species, i.e. A. mordax and ostrowskiae . Adults of these species inhabit the intestine cormorants Nannopterum , whereas larval forms (metacercariae) are found in eyes (vitreous humor) freshwater fishes. Records both have been established across a wide geographic range Americas. Diplostomid adults metacercariae were collected from geographical that spans south-eastern Mexico, southwards to Central South America. Even...
Tylodelphys aztecae n. sp. (Digenea: Diplostomidae) is described from adult specimens obtained the intestine of pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) and metacercariae found in body cavity freshwater fishes families Goodeidae Cyprinidae eight localities across central northern Mexico. The new species mainly distinguished other four Americas (T. adulta, T. americana, elongata brevis) by having a forebody slightly concave, larger ventral sucker, two pseudosuckers between 2 7 eggs uterus....
Among the acanthocephalans, Neoechinorhynchus is one of most speciose genera, with 116 described species distributed worldwide. The adults are found in intestine freshwater and brackish water fish, as well turtles. In this study, a checklist congeneric occurring Middle-American fish turtles presented. contains records established all published accounts, novel data from survey work conducted region comprising Neotropical areas Mexico, some localities Central America. delimitation criteria...
Gyrodactylus mexicanus n. sp. and lamothei are described from the fins skin of Girardinichthys multiradiatus, an endemic freshwater fish central Mexico. is compared to other species that parasitize Fundulus spp., phylogenetically closest group Goodeidae North America. distinguished by having large anchors with well-developed superficial roots, enlarged hooks a proximally disrupted shank (ligament), ventral bar 2 poorly developed anterolateral projections small medial process. G. on American...
Adults of the genus Austrodiplostomum are parasites in cormorants New World, whereas metacercariae from eye globe and brain freshwater brackish water fishes. In this study, specimens mordax South America (type-species) were analyzed together with other spp. collected several locations across Middle North America. Partial DNA sequences mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I ( COI), internal transcribed spacers ITS1, ITS2, 5.8S gene), D2-D3, domains large LSU) nuclear ribosomal DNA,...
Abstract Polymorphidae is a monophyletic group of acanthocephalans distributed worldwide. Within this family, Hexaglandula corynosoma specialist species that uses single bird as definitive host. Southwellina hispida generalist broad spectrum hosts to complete its life cycle. In the current research, sequences cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 ( cox1 ) from mitochondrial DNA were generated 44 specimens H. and 76 S. sympatrically in 6 biogeographic provinces Mexico with objective characterizing...
Abstract Species of the allocreadiid genus Creptotrema are parasites freshwater fishes in Americas. possess one pair muscular oral lobes on sucker. Currently, contains eight species, six distributed South America, Middle America and North America. Genetic data only available for American funduli , a parasite fundulids originally described from Oneida Lake, New York State. In this study, we obtained 28S ribosomal DNA sequences trematodes morphologically similar to agonostomi mountain mullet,...
Abstract Acanthocephalans are a group of obligate endoparasites that alternate between vertebrates and invertebrates to complete their life cycles. Occasionally, the same individual host acts as definitive or paratenic for different acanthocephalan species. In this study, acanthocephalans were sampled in marine fish three localities Yucatán Peninsula; adults cystacanths recovered from intestine body cavity, respectively, Haemulon plumierii off coast Sisal, Yucatán. Ribosomal DNA sequences...
Abstract During parasitological surveys of marine fishes and zooplankton in localities the Northwestern Pacific coast Mexico, 28 Gafftopsail pompano ( Trachinotus rhodopus Gill) 50 mysid crustaceans Metamysidopsis frankfiersi Hendrickx & Hernández-Payán) we identified to be infected with adults cystacanths, respectively an acanthocephalan morphologically corresponding genus Rhadinorhynchus Lühe, 1911. DNA sequences small (SSU) large (LSU) subunits ribosomal DNA, cytochrome c oxidase...
Members of the genus Drepanocephalus are endoparasites fish-eating birds families Phalacrocoracidae and Sulidae distributed across Americas. Currently, contains three species, i.e. D. spathans (type species), olivaceus auritus. Two additional parvicephalus mexicanus were transferred to Petasiger. In current study, available DNA sequences spathans, auritus sp., aligned with newly generated Petasiger mexicanus. Phylogenetic analyses inferred nuclear (LSU, SSU ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2) two...
Saccocoelioides olmecae n. sp. is described from specimens recovered the intestine of fat sleeper Dormitator maculatus (Bloch) (Perciformes: Eleotridae) collected in six localities along coast Gulf Mexico. The new species mainly distinguished other three Szidat, 1954 North and Middle America (i.e. S. sogandaresi Lumsden, 1963, chauhani Lamothe-Argumedo, 1974 lamothei Aguirre-Macedo & Violante-González, 2008) by having an elongated body, a sac-like caecum, uterus that extends to first third...
Abstract Adults of Hysteromorpha triloba (Rudolpi, 1819), Lutz, 1931 inhabit primarily the intestine cormorants across globe, whereas metacercariae have been found in body cavity freshwater fishes families Cyprinidae, Ictaluridae, Ariidae, Pimelodidae and Catostomidae. In this study, adults identified as H. were collected from Neotropical cormorant ( Nannopterum brasilianus ) Mexican tetra fish Astyanax mexicanus Gulf Mexico Pacific Ocean slopes region. Partial DNA sequences mitochondrial...
Gyrodactylid population growth may depend on abiotic variables such as temperature. We tested the survival and reproductive rate of Gyrodactylus mexicanus, a parasite infecting fins Girardinichthys multiradiatus, at 3 different water temperatures, 10–13, 19–22, 24 C. The temporal sequence birth age death each isolated from hosts was recorded through least 8 generations. Our results showed that average number offspring per 2.0 when averaged across all temperatures. However, generation time...
The helminth parasite fauna of Profundulus punctatus in 7 localities from Oaxaca State, Mexico, was studied.A total 132 fish were analyzed. Fourteen taxa recorded, including 9 digeneans (Paracreptotremablancoi, Paracreptotrema profundulusi, Phyllodistomum sp., Culuwiya cf. cichlidorum, Clinostomum sp.,Diplostomidae gen. Posthodiplostomum minimum, Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) felippei and Centrocestus formosanus),2 monogeneans (Gyrodactylus sp. Salsuginus sp.), 3 nematodes (Spinitectus humbertoi,...
