Manganese (Mn) poisoning, a well-known hazard in miners and industrial workers, shares many features with Parkinson9s disease. Two young agricultural workers parkinsonian syndrome, who mentioned exposure to the fungicide maneb (manganese ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamate), led us investigate new possible source of Mn intoxication. Fifty male rural occupational were compared 19 without exposure. We noted significantly higher prevalence plastic rigidity cogwheel phenomenon, headache, fatigue,...
Abstract Konstantin Tretiakoff's doctoral dissertation “Contribution a l'Etude de L'Anatomie pathologique du Locus Niger Soemmering avec quelques déductions relatives à la pathogénie des troubles tonus musculaire et De La Maladie Parkinson” (A Study of the Pathological anatomy locus niger Soemerring and its relevance to pathogenesis changes in muscular tone Parkinson's disease) published 1919 earned him silver medal awarded by University Paris but failed gain recognition importance deserved....
The treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging, especially since it considered highly individualized. Brazilian Academy Neurology has recognized the need to disseminate knowledge about management PD treatment, adapting best evidence reality. Thus, main published guidelines were reviewed based on recommendations group from Movement Disorders Scientific Department Neurology.
Abstract Early‐onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) is distinct from the classic late‐onset PD (LOPD) because of its slower progression. The aim this study was to compare dopamine neuronal loss in EOPD with that LOPD same duration, through transporter (DAT) estimation. Fourteen patients, seven (<50 years) and LOPD, matched for duration were scanned [ 99m Tc]‐TRODAT‐1‐SPECT (INER‐Taiwan), assessed standard scales. patients had 34% lower striatal DAT binding potential (BP) compared (BP = 0.29 ±...
Voice and speech disorders are common in Parkinson's disease patients may lead to social isolation. We employed routine clinical voice therapy measures evaluate the effect of rehabilitation. Twenty with a stable drug regimen participated this study. The were assessed before after program rehabilitation consisting 13 group sessions during 1 month, emphasis on increase laryngeal sphincteric activity. produced an maximal phonation times, decrease values s/z ratio air flow, vocal intensity,...
Abstract LRRK2 mutations can cause familial and sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) with Lewy‐body pathology at post‐mortem. Studies of olfaction in are sparse incongruent. We applied a previously validated translation the 16 item smell identification test from Sniffin' Sticks (SS‐16) to 14 parkinsonian carriers heterozygous G2019S mutation compared 106 PD patients 118 healthy controls. The mean SS‐16 score was higher than ( p < 0.001, 95% CI for β = −4.7 −1.7) lower controls 0.007, +0.6...
ABSTRACT: Dystonia is a syndrome characterized by sustained muscle contraction, provoking twisting and repeti-tive movements or abnormal postures. It may be classified according to etiology, as idiopathic symptomatic. We studied 122 Brazilian patients with dystonic syndrome. Of these, 46 (37.7%) had symptomatic dystonia. The most frequent cause was tardive dystonia (34.8%) followed perinatal cerebral injury (30.4%). Other causes were stroke (13.0%), encephalitis (6.5%) Wilson’s disease...
Cephalic tetanus is a localized form of tetanus. As in generalized forms , trismus prominent feature the disease, leading to considerable difficulty feeding, swallowing saliva and mouth hygiene. These difficulties often precede respiratory problems aspiration bronchopneumonia frequent life-threatening complication. Muscle relaxants other than curare drugs may show limited benefit for relieving trismus. Tetanospasmin, tetanic neurotoxin, botulinum toxin share many similarities, having closely...
Abstract Data on the frequency of PINK1 mutations in Brazilian patients with early‐onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) are lacking. The aim this report was to investigate gene a cohort EOPD. Sixty consecutive familial or sporadic EOPD were included. All eight exons and exon‐intron boundaries analyzed. We did not find any pathogenic mutation our cohort. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) identified 46.7% 45.9% controls ( P = 0.9). SNPs had already been described previous reports. results...
Agentes terapêuticos eficácia comprovada estudos classe I são agonistas dopaminérgicos, levodopa gabapentina...
Dystonia may be classified by age of onset (childhood, adolescence, adult onset), body distribution the abnormal movements (focal, segmental, unilateral, multifocal and generalized) etiology (idiopathic symptomatic). We studied 76 patients with idiopathic dystonia among 122; cases dystonic syndrome (62.3% total). There were 48 female 28 male patients. Adult-onset focal was most frequent feature (37 patients). The generalized more frequently seen under 20, whereas segmental usually started...
Patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) manifest visual losses. However, it is not known whether these losses are equivalent in both early-onset (EOPD) and late-onset (LOPD) patients. We evaluated contrast sensitivity color vision EOPD LOPD patients age-matched controls. Losses occurred patient groups but were more pronounced EOPD, consistent the notion that non-motor symptoms affected by age of symptom onset. More studies function needed to understand how aging related pathophysiology PD...
Although the precise etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) is as yet unknown, it appears that certain environmental factors are involved. Prior living in a rural area has been implicated possible risk factor for PD, particularly early onset type. We evaluated role previous conditions clinical correlates and outcome characteristics 118 PD patients. All them were seen from January 1987 to October 1992. The Rural Group (RG) comprised 71 patients (60.2%) who had lived at least 10 years (mainly...
