Mathematical modelling has often been emphasized at the secondary level, but more research is needed elementary level. This paper serves to summarize what known about mathematical guide future research. A targeted and general literature search was conducted studies were summarized based on five categories: content of intervention, assessment data collected, unit analysis studied, population, effectiveness. It found that there three main units into which could be categorized: representational...
This paper presents the results of a literature review focusing on use and potential Fermi problems (FPs) in STEM disciplines. We identify different usages roles given to FPs each disciplines highlight their promote modeling real phenomena situations as well learning about estimation quantities. Modeling is found be at heart integrating key facilitator that enables students tackle complex content all The are discussed terms possibilities support development twenty-first century competencies
In this work we study the development of mathematical models by students in upper cycle Primary Education (10 and 11 years old) to Large Number Estimation Problems. After a qualitative analysis their output, found that, when worked on problems teams, they used strategies including such as grid distribution, iteration reference point model, or population density. The results obtained allow us argue that use Problems is suitable activity for introducing modelling processes School classrooms.
Abstract In this paper, we draw on recent research so-called Fermi problems and situate the fundamental principles underlying type of tasks their use from a task design perspective. We models modelling perspective teaching learning to elaborate aspects related single-use, as well sequences of, problems. addition, discuss framework (called problem activity template [FPAT] framework) for supporting facilitate students' within particular mathematics content areas and/or aimed at concepts or...
A qualitative research study is presented herein with the purpose of identifying mathematics learning opportunities in a commercial version Tower Defense game. These are understood as mathematicisable moments game and involve establishment relationships between mathematical problem solving. Based on analysis nature these moments, we present several design options that being implemented didactic
We study how a group of 16-year-old students solve sequence problems that require estimating large quantities. The problem was designed to foster creating mathematical models. characterise the models constructed by while working both individually and in small teams analyse they evolve throughout because having deal with restrictions imposed real-life context different problems. observe that: a) progressively abandon poorest strategies initial individual schemes embrace adaptable greater...
In this paper, we present a qualitative study in which analyse the videorecordings of four groups students solving Fermi Problems. Previous studies show that Secondary School solve type problems using complex problem processes and developing mathematical models. order to students' processes, so-called Modelling Activity Diagrams were used. The results demonstrate is matter, some theoretical tools used field Mathematical Education fail adequately reflect level complexity. addition, are...
Although it is a challenge for primary school teachers, real-context estimation problems can be used as an introduction to mathematical modeling. With this aim, we designed two-phase activity: in the first phase, 224 prospective teachers developed individual action plans solve sequence of classroom; second they completed solution same working groups real location where four were contextualized. A comparative study showed that, able adapt their solutions contextual features detected situ that...
Fermi problems are which, due to their difficulty, can be satisfactorily solved by being broken down into smaller pieces that separately. In this article, we present different sequences of activities involving carried out in Secondary School classes. The aim these is discuss problem-solving strategies and introduce modelling processes compulsory education.
