In this paper, we describe the effects of voluntary cage wheel exercise on mouse cardiac and skeletal muscle. Inbred male C57/Bl6 mice (age 8–10 wk; n = 12) ran an average 4.3 h/24 h, for distance 6.8 km/24 at speed 26.4 m/min. A significant increase in ratio heart mass to body (mg/g) was evident after 2 wk exercise, atrial natriuretic factor brain peptide mRNA levels were significantly increased ventricles 4 exercise. percentage fibers expressing myosin heavy chain (MHC) IIa observed both...

The ancient MYH7b gene, expressed in striated muscle and brain, encodes a sarcomeric myosin the intronic microRNA miR-499. We find that skipping of an exon introduces premature termination codon transcript downregulates protein production without affecting expression. Among other genes, endogenous miR-499 targets 3' untranslated region transcription factor Sox6, which turn acts as repressor transcriptional activity. Thus, concerted alternative splicing uncouple level expression when their...

Previous studies of the Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon system, as an insertional mutagen in germline mice, have used reverse genetic approaches. These led to its proposed use for regional saturation mutagenesis by taking a forward-genetic approach. Thus, we SB system mutate region mouse Chromosome 11 screen recessive lethal and viable phenotypes. This work represents first reported phenotype-driven The approach was successful both recovering visible behavioral mutants, including dominant...

The probabilistic mapping of landslide occurrence at a high spatial resolution and over large geographic extent is explored using random forests (RF) machine learning; light detection ranging (LiDAR)-derived terrain variables; additional variables relating to lithology, soils, distance roads streams cost streams; training data interpreted from LiDAR-derivatives. Using set all predictor variables, an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) 0.946 obtained. Our...

10.1152/ japplphysiol.00832.2001.—To examine the effects of gene inactivation on plasticity skeletal muscle, mice null for a specific myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform were subjected to voluntary wheel-running paradigm. Despite reduced running performance compared with nontransgenic C57BL/6 (NTG), both MHC IIb and IId/x animals exhibited increased muscle fiber size oxidative capacity wheel running. In animals, there was no significant change in percentage fibers expressing particular at any...

The sarcomeric myosin gene, Myh7b, encodes an intronic microRNA, miR-499, which regulates cardiac and skeletal muscle biology, yet little is known about its transcriptional regulation. To identify the transcription factors involved in regulating Myh7b/miR-499 gene expression, we have mapped start sites identified upstream 6.2 kb region of mouse Myh7b whose activity mimics expression pattern endogenous both vitro vivo. Through promoter deletion analysis, a distal E-box element proximal Ikaros...

Nutrient loads were estimated for the 34 watersheds draining into Cayuga Lake, New York, through use of a watershed model. Financial and human resources very limited project, but significant cost savings achieved project decisions. Chief among these selection model that did not require calibration historic water quality monitoring data testing. Savings also obtained by extrapolating soil properties from related information (nutrient contents organic matter), substituting literature...
