A five-coordinate chloride ion is believed to template the assembly of a pentadecanuclear lanthanide complex europium(III). This cluster (see picture) has been prepared by coordination europium(III) perchlorate with tyrosine at about pH 6. Single crystal X-ray analysis established an unprecedented structure in which 15 constituent ions are organized into three parallel pentagonal layers.

The reaction of oxygen with rhodium complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbenes was found to give dioxygen rare square planar geometries and unusually short O−O bond lengths. Analysis the bonding in these by Rh L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Raman spectroscopy, DFT calculations provides evidence for a model which singlet is bound Rh(I) d8 metal complex, rather than more common Rh(III) d6 peroxo species octahedral geometry lengths 1.4−1.5 Å range.
