We analyze the social network emerging from user comment activity on website Slashdot. The presents common features of traditional networks such as a giant component, small average path length and high clustering, but differs them showing moderate reciprocity neutral assortativity by degree. Using Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistical tests, we show that degree distributions are better explained log-normal instead power-law distributions. also study structure discussion threads using an intuitive...
Talk pages play a fundamental role in Wikipedia as the place for discussion and communication. In this work we use comments on these to extract study three networks, corresponding different kinds of interactions. We find evidence specific assortativity profile which differentiates article discussions from personal conversations. An analysis tree structure talk allows capture patterns interaction, reveals structural differences among about articles semantic areas.
Core decomposition has proven to be a useful primitive for wide range of graph analyses. One its most appealing features is that, unlike other notions dense subgraphs, it can computed linearly in the size input graph. In this paper we provide an analogous tool uncertain graphs, i.e., graphs whose edges are assigned probability existence. The fact that core efficiently deterministic does not guarantee efficiency where even simplest operations may become computationally intensive. Here show...
Abstract The irruption of social media in the political sphere is generating repositories “Big Data,” which can be mined to gain insights into communication dynamics. research reported here relies on a large data set from Twitter examine activity, emotional content, and interactions parties politicians during campaign for Spanish national elections November 2011. aim this study investigate adaptation new organizational paradigm originating evolution Internet online networks. We analyze reply...
This paper shows that online political discussion networks are, on average, wider and deeper than the generated by other types of discussions: they engage a larger number participants cascade through more levels nested comments. Using data collected from Slashdot forum, this reconstructs threads as hierarchical proposes model for their comparison classification. In addition to substantive topic discussion, which corresponds different sections forum (such Developers, Games, or Politics), we...
Wikipedia is a huge global repository of human knowledge, that can be leveraged to investigate interwinements between cultures. With this aim, we apply methods Markov chains and Google matrix, for the analysis hyperlink networks 24 language editions, rank all their articles by PageRank, 2DRank CheiRank algorithms. Using automatic extraction people names, obtain top 100 historical figures, each edition algorithm. We spatial, temporal, gender distributions in dependence cultural origins. Our...
Despite the undisputed role of emotions in teamwork, not much is known about make-up online collaboration. Publicly available repositories collaboration data, such as Wikipedia editor discussions, now enable large-scale study affect and dialogue peer production. We investigate established community focus on how emotion differ depending status, gender, communication network [Formula: see text] editors who have written at least 100 comments English Wikipedia's article talk pages. Emotions are...
This article examines how emotional reactions to political events shape public opinion. We analyze discussions in which people voluntarily engage online approximate the agenda: Online offer a natural approach salience of issues and means as take place real time. measure shifts emotions over period that includes 2 U.S. presidential elections, 9/11 attacks, start military action Afghanistan Iraq. Our findings show help explain approval rates for same period, casts novel light on mechanisms...
We analyze the structure and evolution of discussion cascades in four popular websites: Slashdot, Barrapunto, Meneame Wikipedia. Despite big heterogeneities between these sites, a preferential attachment (PA) model with bias to root can capture temporal observed trees many their statistical properties, namely, probability distributions branching factors (degrees), subtree sizes certain correlations. The parameters are learned efficiently using novel maximum likelihood estimation scheme for...
Collaborative content creation inevitably reaches situations where different points of view lead to conflict. We focus on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia anyone may edit, disputes about in controversial articles often reflect larger societal debates. While Wikipedia has a public edit history and discussion section for every article, substance these sections is difficult phantom users interested development an article locating which topics were most controversial. In this paper we present...
Gender homophily, or the preference for interaction with individuals of same gender, has been observed in many contexts, especially during childhood and adolescence. In this study we investigate such phenomenon by analyzing interactions ∼10 million users Tuenti, a Spanish social networking service popular among teenagers. dyadic relationships find evidence higher gender homophily women. We also observe more friends to connect opposite gender. A particularly marked difference emerges signing...
The popularity of the Web has allowed individuals to communicate and interact with each other on a global scale: people connect both close friends acquaintances, creating ties that can bridge otherwise separated groups people. Recent evidence suggests spatial distance is still affecting social links established online platforms, preferentially connecting closer In this work we study relationships between interaction strength, structural position members large-scale networking platform,...
Abstract. Tropical cyclones (TCs) produce strong winds and heavy rains accompanied by consecutive events such as landslides storm surges, resulting in losses of lives livelihoods, particularly regions with high socioeconomic vulnerability. To proactively mitigate the impacts TCs, humanitarian actors implement anticipatory action. In this work, we build upon an existing action for Philippines, which uses impact-based forecasting model housing damage based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting...
This article analyzes how well OpenAI's LLM GPT-4 can emulate different personalities and simulate populations to answer psychological questionnaires similarly real population samples. For this purpose, we performed experiments with the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Abbreviated (EPQR-A) in three languages (Spanish, English, Slovak). The EPQR-A measures personality on four scales: extraversion (E: sociability), neuroticism (N: emotional stability), psychoticism (P: tendency break...
We perform a statistical analysis of user's reaction time to new discussion thread in online debates on the popular news site Slashdot. First, we show with Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests that mixture two log-normal distributions combined circadian rhythm community is able explain surprising accuracy comments within thread. Second, this characterization allows predict intermediate and long-term user behavior acceptable precision. The prediction method based activity-prototypes, which consist...
Wikipedia is a collaboratively-edited online encyclopaedia that relies on thousands of editors to both contribute articles and maintain their quality. Over the last years, research has extensively investigated this group users while another users, readers, preferences behavior have not been much studied. This paper makes its %their activities visible valuable Wikipedia's editor community. We carried out study two datasets covering 13-months period obtain insights reading in Wikipedia. show...
Online discussion is essential for the communication and collaboration of online communities. The reciprocal exchange messages between users that characterizes can be represented in many different ways. While some platforms display chronologically using a simple linear interface, others use hierarchical (threaded) interface to represent more explicitly structure discussion. Although type representation has been shown affect communication, best our knowledge, impact either one or other not...
Online discussion in form of written comments is a core component many social media platforms. It has attracted increasing attention from academia, mainly because theories sciences can be explored at an unprecedented scale. This interest led to the development statistical models which are able characterize dynamics threaded online conversations. In this paper, we review research on modeling discussions, particular, describe current generative structure and growth threads. These parametrized...
Online discussion threads are conversational cascades in the form of posted messages that can be generally found social systems comprise many-to-many interaction such as blogs, news aggregators or bulletin board systems. We propose a framework based on generative models growing trees to analyse structure and evolution threads. consider growth determined by an interplay between popularity, novelty trend (or bias) reply thread originator. The relevance these features is estimated using full...
We employ Natural Language Processing techniques to analyse 377808 English song lyrics from the "Two Million Song Database" corpus, focusing on expression of sexism across five decades (1960-2010) and measurement gender biases. Using a classifier, we identify sexist at larger scale than previous studies using small samples manually annotated popular songs. Furthermore, reveal biases by measuring associations in word embeddings learned lyrics. find content increase time, especially male...
Online friendship connections are often not representative of social relationships or shared interest between users, but merely provide a public display personal identity. A better picture online behaviour can be achieved by taking into account the intensity communication levels yielding useful insights for service providers supporting this communication. Among several factors impacting user interactions, geographic distance might affecting how users communicate with their friends. While...
