중등학교 과학 및 지구과학 교과서의 해류도는 해양에 대한 학생들의 호기심과 관심을 유도하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 해류도들은 급변하는 기후변화와 지구상의 에너지 균형 문제와 관련이 있는 해류에 대해 학생들이 학습할 수 기회를 제공할 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 최근의 해류관련 과학적 지식과 비교해 볼 때 다양한 오류들을 내포하고 있었다. 연구는 오류가 없는 해류도를 제작하고 동해 해류도들을 하나로 통일하기 위하여 해류도 제작의 기본적인 틀과 방법을 제안하였다. 먼저 중등 과학교과서 27종의 해류도와 기존의 연구 논문에서 제시한 주요 27개의 도법을 통일하였으며 동해의 난류와 한류들의 수치화된 정량적인 위치 정보를 추출하였다. 대한해협에서 대마난류의 분지 양상, 일본연안분지와 외해분지, 동한난류의 연안거리와 북상한계, 쓰가루해협, 소야해협을 통한 유출 양상과 환류, 리만한류와 북한한류의 분포 양상 등 제작을 위한 분석 항목들을 선정하였다. 해양 현장관측을 기반으로 형성된...

이 연구는 인공위성 고도계로 관측한 해수면 높이 자료를 이용하여 동해 표층해류를 생산하고, 전체 영역에 대하여 동시성 있는 표층해류 분포를 해류 정보 사용자에게 제공하기 위한 최초의 시도이다. 전 영역에서 고도계와 연안 조위관측소의 동시에 얻을 수 있으므로 준실시간으로 넓은 해역에 표층 지형류의 산출이 가능하다. 산출된 지형류로부터 주요 해류의 위치와 세기 그리고 중규모 이상의 소용돌이 발달 양상을 살펴볼 있다. 따라서 이들 이름과 평균적인 위치를 알 있도록 해양지명에 대한 명칭과 기술하고, 개념적인 해류도를 제시하였다. 해류정보가 실제 실용화될 고도계 산출한 월 계절 연도별 분포 예를 들고, 각 설명하였다. 또한 시 공간적으로 변화하는 형태를 객관적으로 분류하기 위하여 16년(1993~2008년)간의 경험직교함수(Empirical Orthogonal Function, EOF)를 분석하였다.
