Morphological studies on Celtis over the last 50 years shown that pyrenes contain specific characters useful for delimitation of its species. Taxonomic revisions groups in this genus, however, ignored pyrenes, leading to recognition highly variable species complexes. In study, we reexamine one such groups, C. iguanaea complex, evaluate taxonomy. This taxonomic group is widely distributed Neotropical region and was previously treated as a single Numerous species-level synonyms have been used....
Abstract A new species of Cecropia (Urticaceae) is described for Amazonas state, Brazil. Collecting and processing the vouchers followed usual procedures botanical specimens. Parallel to herbarium procedures, phylogenetic analyses were performed photographs in field obtained. The shares morphological similarities with membranacea C. concolor, which are discussed this paper. It appears as a sister group analysis strongly supported clade. An identification key all known from Central Amazon...
Ant-plant mutualisms are abundant in the tropics and popular models for ecological study, but investigating origin evolution of such systems requires a phylogenetic framework.A common ant-plant mutualism Neotropics involves genus Cecropia, group fast-growing pioneer trees that important forest regeneration.Relationships between genera tribe Cecropieae (Urticaceae), including Coussapoa, Musanga, Myrianthus, Pourouma, unknown necessary to investigate evolutionary history Cecropia-ant...
During the course of floristic studies on Urticaceae in Distrito Federal, Brazil, we encountered a species Pilea that was not described until now. brasiliensis is here and illustrated, its affinities are discussed position Weddell & Killip’s subdivisions genus indicated. A Conservation Assessment determines P. to be Critically Endagered (CE) with possibility it may Extinct Wild (EW).
Studies that place the origin of stem node Ficus in Gondwana or Eurasia at c. 136–134 Mya are not congruent with estimated Moraceae Late Cretaceous. To elucidate these origins, molecular analyses were performed using three calibration points BEAST 268 terminal taxa based on ITS, ETS, G3pdh, ncpGS and GBSSI sequences. S-DIVA, DEC S-DEC used to estimate ancestral areas. The arrangement staminate flowers within syconium supports current phylogenetic framework Ficus. Our results suggest lineage...
In preparation for a new Neotropical taxonomic review and global phylogeny focusing on the lineages of Celtis, some nomenclatural changes are needed. Lectotypes designated Celtis alnifolia, C. asperula, brasiliensis, clausseniana, diffusa, morifolia, fluminensis, glycycarpa, hilariana, membranacea, orthacanthos, selloviana Momisia integrifolia, an epitype is asperula. flavovenarum was proposed as name to replace homonym morifolia. For spinosa we provide locality its type.
In order to understand the effects of human impacts on structure and functioning tropical forests, we should consider studies animal-plant interactions such as antplant mutualistic interactions. We investigated between ants (Azteca genera) Cecropia plants in habitats secondary forest pasture used cattle fields. We tested for following hyphothesis: (i) from are more susceptible foliar herbivory than forest, (ii) defense promoted by Azteca genus is less efficient when compared forested areas....
During the Neotropical review of Celtis, a new species (Celtis atlantica) endemic and endangered to southeastern Brazil was discovered. A morphological description, distribution map, conservation status, taxonomic notes, illustrations, an identification key Celtis from Southern Cone are provided.
Studies on Celtis over the last 50 years have established role of pyrene in delimitation species. This structure is fundamental importance for understanding genus and has recently changed species delimitation, which was previously very broad vague. Based these new findings, we investigated iguanaea complex. taxonomic group treated as a single species, but it included several species-level synonyms Neotropical region no modern nomenclatural revision yet available. In order to correctly...
The diversity of endophytes and their ecological relationships with the endangered conifer Araucaria angustifolia (a critically species) are unrevealed. This study aimed to characterize endophytic fungi associated A. angustifolia. To this end, we analyzed 90 fragments from five individuals collected a mixed localized fragment in Guarapuava-PR, Brazil. total DNA 61 morphotypes was extracted Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region amplified sequenced. sequence analysis allowed identification...
In preparation for a taxonomic review and global phylogeny focusing on the Neotropical lineages of Celtis, names described to northern South America, Caribbean, Central America southern United States were revised. For axis, 87 identified, 60 which have been reviewed in this contribution. Lectotypes are designated Celtis berlandieri, C. dichotoma, jamaicensis, litoralis, pavonii, pubescens, riparia, rufescens, schiedeana, swartzii, tikalana, triflora, velutina Sponia chichilea. Neotypes...
During a taxonomic revision of Pourouma (Urticaceae), new species was discovered. amacayacuensis, endemic to the municipality Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia is here described and illustrated. This morphologically similar P. floccosa, but distinguished by foliar lamina with apex acute acuminate, adaxial surface scabrous, abaxial stipules indument yellowish, hirsute, fruiting perianth brown-yellowish, velutinous.
This article reviews the nomenclature of 56 names genus Celtis, 54 which are native to African continent and two natives Asian continent. Of these names, 33 lectotypified here. Epitypes designated for C. africana holtzii. A neotype is toka. More than 200 types were located, most previously unknown.
The genus Celtis L. (Cannabaceae) comprises around 73 species distributed in temperate and tropical regions of both hemispheres. Most South American belong to the subgenus Mertensia Planch., they are characterized by showing high morphological plasticity. A recent taxonomic revision this group was carried out with an excessively reductionist criterion regarding number accepted that does not clearly reflect differences among them. In order contribute correct delimitation specific entities, a...
