The basic principles of structure, stereochemistry, and nomenclature carotenoids are described the relationships between structure chemical physical properties on which all varied biological functions actions depend discussed. conjugated polyene chromophore determines not only light absorption properties, hence color, but also photochemical molecule consequent light-harvesting photoprotective action. chain is feature mainly responsible for reactivity toward oxidizing agents free radicals,...

Lutein, a dihydroxy beta, epsilon-carotenoid, is the predominant carotenoid in photosynthetic plant tissue and plays critical role light-harvesting complex assembly function. To further understand lutein synthesis function, we isolated four lutein-deficient mutants of Arabidopsis that define two loci, lut1 lut2 (for deficient). These loci are required for biosynthesis but not beta-carotenoids. The mutations recessive, accumulate high levels zeinoxanthin, which immediate precursor lutein, as...

We report the results of controlled feeding trials on tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius). The desired colour was obtained by a diet supplemented with astaxanthin (50 p.p.m) for 7–8 weeks before harvest. Similar coloration achieved, however, including in feed an algal material (Dunaliella salina) that contains β-carotene but no astaxanthin. Feed containing at 125 p.p.m also gave required weeks, whereas same after only 5–6 when 175 used. Irrespective whether shrimp were fed or...

β-Carotene (all-trans), β-cryptoxanthin (all-trans and cis), zeaxanthin luteoxanthin isomers, violaxanthin neoxanthin cis) were identified in mango cultivar Keitt by means of HPLC data (retention time, co-injection, chemical reactions). Mass spectrometry (molecular ion, fragmentation pattern, m/z relative intensity) confirmed the identity these carotenoids (not geometric form); additionally, lutein mutatochrome detected when a large amount sample was utilized. The quantitative composition...

Summary Four genes essential for bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis were known to be encoded within a 45 kb region of the Rhodobacter sphaeroides genome, boundaries which are defined by puh and puf reaction‐centre light‐harvesting LH1 complexes. The cluster is represented eight overlapping inserts cloned in mobilizable vector pSUP202. We have used localized transposon Tn5 mutagenesis characterize this further; total 87 independent insertions generated identify nine biosynthesis, six carotenoid...

During development, the ectoderm is patterned by a combination of BMP and WNT signaling. Research in model organisms has provided substantial insight into this process; however, there are currently no systems which to study ectodermal patterning humans. Further, complexity neural plate border specification made it difficult transition from discovering genes involved deeper mechanistic understanding. Here, we develop an vitro human patterning, embryonic stem cells self-organize form robust...
