Nanoporous materials have attracted great attention for gas storage, but achieving high volumetric storage capacity remains a challenge. Here, by using neutron powder diffraction, adsorption, inelastic scattering and first-principles calculations, we investigate magnesium borohydride framework that has small pores partially negatively charged non-flat interior hydrogen nitrogen uptake. Hydrogen occupy distinctly different adsorption sites in the pores, with very limiting capacities of 2.33 H
Summary The study explored context‐driven food odour perception with links to chemical profiling of flavour compounds. Participants rated the intensity three odours (vanilla, almond, lemon) in a Neutral context and VR simulation International Space Station. involved 54 adults aged 18–39 years no history motion sickness and/or vertigo. demonstrated significantly higher ratings for vanilla ( P = 0.009) almond < 0.001) odours, compared context. Clustering based on perceived identified that...
We report the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a Pr0.52Sr0.48MnO3 single crystal. A peak temperature dependence of magnetic entropy change (ΔSM) with fairly large negative value (≈3.8 J/kg K) is observed at 275 K close to Curie temperature. MCE spread over wide range resulting considerable refrigerant capacity (≈293 J/kg). At low sign ΔSM changes, below which anomalous field indicating coexistence ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Interplay between interactions strongly...
EMU is a cold-neutron backscattering spectrometer installed (Fig. 1) in the neutron guide hall of OPAL research reactor at ANSTO. It crystal analyser based on Si (111) crystal...
We have investigated the magnetoelastic effects in MF(2) (M = Mn, Fe, Ni) associated with antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature T(N) by neutron powder diffraction. The variation of lattice parameters and unit cell volume has been determined accurately small steps. From a, c V strains Δa, Δc ΔV extracted. Rietveld refinement crystal magnetic structures from diffraction data at low gave a moment 5.12 ± 0.09 μ(B), 4.05 0.05 μ(B) 1.99 per Fe Ni ions, respectively. couple linearly...
Time-resolved in situ measurements using a combination of the electromagnetic levitation technique and energy dispersive diffraction synchrotron radiation have been applied to solidification undercooled Al-Ni melts with 18–31.5 at.% Ni. Undercooling below liquidus temperature did not alter primary phase selection. However, during further cooling semisolid samples formation metastable decagonal quasicrystalline was observed, depending on processing conditions. This subsequently transforms can...
We describe the characterization of a high-temperature (2000K) thermal gas aggregation source that is ultrahigh vacuum compatible and can cleanly deposit transition metal clusters with partial pressures contaminants in 10−11mbar range allowing codeposition highly reactive matrices. In particular, we investigate effect varying (i) bath pressure composition on size distribution flux produced (ii) position crucible within source. The mass spectra Fe produced, recorded using quadrupole filter,...
In 2011 Professor Susan Schorr was awarded 300.000,00€ by the Helmholtz Association to build a neutron Laue diffractometer at BER-II reactor in Berlin. Such an instrument had always been missin...
Bulk glasses exhibit extra vibrational modes at low energies, known as the boson peak. The microscopic dynamics in nanoscale alumina impact performance of qubits and other superconducting devices, however existence peak these has not been previously measured. Here we report neutron spectroscopy on Al/Al$_2$O$_{3-x}$ nanoparticles consisting spherical metallic cores from 20 to 1000 nm surrounded by a 3.5 thick glass. An intense low-energy is observed $\omega_{BP}$ = 2.8 $\pm$ 0.6 meV for...
We investigated the low-energy excitations in parent compound NdFeAsO of Fe-pnictide superconductor $\ensuremath{\mu}$eV range by a back-scattering neutron spectrometer. The energy scans on powder sample revealed inelastic peaks at $E$ = 1.600 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0.003$ $T=0.055$ K both energy-gain and energy-loss sides. move gradually toward lower with increasing temperature finally merge elastic peak about 6 K. interpret to be due transition between...
The absorber of the hot carrier solar cell (HCSC) needs to have a considerably reduced thermalisation rate, in order maintain photo-generated carriers for enough time such that they can be extracted. slow cooling effect is predicted materials which phononic band gap sufficiently large block Klemens decay. Binary compounds with mass ratio between constituent elements are likely gap. Titanium hydride one these binary has potential become an HCSC. Whilst been observed stoichiometric TiH2, it...
The leaching of Al from intermetallic samples Nickel Aluminium alloys to form Raney-type nickel catalysts is widely used in the hydrogenation industry, however, little known process itself. In this study, was measured realtime, situ, using high-flux powder neutron diffractometer, D20, at Institut Laue-Langevin. Despite liberation hydrogen and effervescent nature reaction transformation dry phases into Ni determined. Samples produced by gas-atomisation were found leach faster than those cast...
Agglomerates of nanosized metal particles can be deposited onto a variety substrates using custom-built, microgravity-compatible evaporation/condensation device. A aerosol with high solid loading is produced by rf-induction coil heating melt in laminar inert gas flow. Valves and flow controllers operating hypergravity microgravity conditions allow powder samples to prepared from such aerosols suppressing buoyancy sedimentation effects. We present here the technical details for parabolic...
Space weather is a key component in the daily operation of many technological systems and applications, including large-scale power grids, high-frequency radio systems, satellite systems. As international space sector continues to boom, accessible products, tools education are increasingly important ensure that actors (both old new) equipped with knowledge how influences their activities applications. At RMIT University, initiative was taken develop Weather Prediction Laboratory exercise for...
