Background
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that can degrade the extracellular matrix and drive tissue remodelling, key processes in pathogenesis of COPD. The development small airway disease has been identified as a critical mechanism early airflow obstruction but contribution MMPs human is poorly characterised.
Objectives
We investigated role inflammatory cytokines lung by quantifying levels determining relationships with pathological components...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use gadolinium and barium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in detecting intestinal extraintestinal Crohn's disease compare MRI with contrast-enhanced helical computed tomography (CT). Twenty-six patients underwent examinations, including gadolinium-enhanced, fat suppressed fast multiplanar spoiled gradient-recalled (FMPSPGR) MR oral 2% barium sulfate rectal water CT using IV positive (13) or negative contrast material. images scans were...

Summary. Early fetal biparietal diameter (BPD) measurements were obtained with ultrasound in 1062 women attending for antenatal care; a random half had the results withheld from obstetricians. Of 1026 who sure of dates their last normal menstrual period, 829 (81%) found to have appropriate measurements, 3% pregnancy was more than 2 weeks further advanced and 14% less calculated. In 30% whose intended be withheld, code broken because clinical concern. There no differences outcome (birthweight...

The 1994 Northridge, Calif., earthquake caused widespread permanent ground deformation on the gently sloping alluvial fan surface of San Fernando Valley. cracks and distributed damaged both pipelines structures. To evaluate mechanism soil failure, detailed subsurface investigations were conducted at four sites. Three sites are underlain by saturated sandy silts with low standard penetration test cone values. These soils similar to those that liquefied during 1971 earthquake, shown widely...
Cumulative frequency distributions of the liquefaction potential index (LPI) surficial geologic units were used to define hazard in a 140- km2 area along eastern shore San Francisco Bay near Oakland, California. LPI values computed for 202 cone penetration tests conducted study area. The each unit was defined by cumulative at LPI=5. predict that 73% and 3%, respectively, underlain artificial fill Holocene alluvial fan deposits will show surface manifestations during M7.1 earthquake on nearby...

Shear-wave velocities of shallow surficial geologic units were measured at 210 sites in a 140-km 2 area the greater Oakland, California, near margin San Francisco Bay. Differences between average values shear-wave velocity for each unit computed by alternative approaches general smaller than observed variability. Averages estimated arithmetic mean, geometric and slowness differed 1 to 8%, while coefficients variation ranged from 14 25%. With exception younger Bay mud that underlies Bay, are...
On April 26, 1981, an earthquake (Ms=6.0)occurred 6 km north of Westmorland in the Imperial Valley California.Although there was no surface faulting associated with this earthquake, were many expressions liquefaction, mostly sand boils.Similar effects occurred area after earthquakes 1930, 1950, and 1957.Sand boils concentrated areas late-Holocene fluvial-deltaic deposits. These deposits originated from surrounding mountains Colorado Plateau via River. To investigate liquefaction sites 1981...
Sands that did and not liquefy at two sites during the 1979 Imperial Valley, Calif., earthquake (ML=6.6) are identified their properties evaluated. From cone soundings, stratigraphy was determined, soil types estimated, optimal locations for samples SPT tests selected. Samples were used to classify sediments identify modes of deposition. evaluate liquefaction susceptibility. Loose fine sands in an abandoned channel liquefied produced sand boils, ground fissures, a lateral spread Heber Road...

Abstract Quantitative features that can currently be obtained from medical imaging do not provide a complete picture of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In this paper, we introduce novel analytical tool based on persistent homology extracts quantitative chest CT scans to describe the geometric structure airways inside lungs. We show these new radiomic stratify COPD patients in agreement with GOLD guidelines for and distinguish between inspiratory expiratory scans. These...
