The community associated to the kelp Macrocystis pyrifera from Beagle Channel (54°00´S; 68°20´W) was studied. Sixty-eight taxa including Algae (5), Porifera (indet.), Bryozoa (7), Nemertea (2), Annelida (10), Mollusca (22), Crustacea (15) and Echinodermata (7) were recognized. A seasonal sampling during one year showed differences in composition when comparing (a) two different environments; (b) spring-summer period autumn-winter period; (c) parts of alga (fronds holdfast).
The isotopic fingerprint of terrestrial gastropods has been increasingly used as a credible natural paleoenvironmental archive. Most published work this proxy at tropical and temperate latitudes the Northern Hemisphere, focused on entire-shell analysis. present study provides intra-shell profiles to infer average seasonal late Holocene environmental conditions in central Argentina (30°S). Shells Plagiodontes daedaleus (Gastropoda: Odontostomidae) were retrieved from Alero Deodoro Roca–Sector...
Palaeontological studies on postglacial molluscan faunas from marine deposits located along the northern coast of Beagle Channel (lat. 54°55’S, long. 68°34’-67°11’W) showed differences various assemblages during a period climatic stability after deglaciation. Oceanographic changes, different local environmental conditions and/or episodes minor fluctuations are pointed out as causes for variations in faunal composition. Comparison with Quaternary molluscs Antarctica that these palaeofaunas...
To achieve a better understanding of predation pattern recorded in the fossil record it is essential to study predator-prey interactions modern seas.It includes data collected from field observations as well experiments captivity.Such an approach allows recognition bioeroders, its description and also provides quantification these interactions. This work offers case traces resulting between three mussels: Mytilus chilensis, Brachidontes purpuratus, Aulacomya atra; their five natural enemies:...
Drilling predation is frequently studied in the fossil record.Less information available from recent environments, however.Previous studies have indicated that drilling usually higher tropics but little research has been undertaken high latitudes. To address this hypothesis, we examine muricid-drilling along a 1,000 km transect southern South America.Drilling frequencies ranged between 3% and 36%, they were not correlated with abundance of predator (Trophon geversianus) or its preferred...
In the Magellan region, much of shoreline Beagle Channel coast (54°53´S; 67° - 68°W) is bordered by Holocene raised beaches, which contain a large number molluscs and other shelled taxa. The purpose this work to document presence various molluscan assemblages deposited with little or no postmortem transportation. An epifaunal Chlamys patagonica palaeocommunity (ca. 8,000 7,000 BP) three infaunal (Tawera gayi, Ameghinomya antiqua Hiatella solida Ensis macha) palaeocommunities 4,400 4,000 were...
In this work we studied bioerosion and encrustation on dead shells of the shallow benthic clam Venus antiqua from Patagonia Argentina with aim understanding biotic interactions (live/live interaction) postmortem (live/dead interaction). In regard, drill hole analysis epibiont distribution in modern death assemblages were performed.Additionally, analyzed crushing traces drilling gastropod Trophon geversianus, which caused by another predator. The placement V. show holes (75%) Crepidula...
As the Beagle Channel lies between Atlantic and Pacific oceans, this is a critical region for interpretation of faunal distributions in Magellan Region. This work proposes paleoenvironmental Holocene, inferred from malacological data. The development different local benthic paleocommunities during mid-Holocene associated with diversity habitats inside channel. analysis records Venus antigua Ensis macha through time their geographic links to ecological factors showed that these taxa are...
The use of rocky intertidal assemblages in paleoecology and conservation paleobiology studies is limited because these environments have low preservation potential. Here, we evaluate the fidelity between living mussel bed communities (life or LAs) mollusk shell accumulations (death DAs) from environmentally harsh Patagonian Atlantic Coast.LAs were sampled mid-intertidal mussel-dominated habitats while DAs collected high water mark at beaches close proximity to community assess live-dead...
Marine beach shell deposits recording a pre-Holocene marine transgression have been found at the southern shore of Beagle Channel, Isla Navarino, Chile. These shelly were dated by AMS 41,700 14C years B.P., which clearly indicates Pleistocene age. A sample wood underlying yielded an infinite age (>46.1 ka B.P.). If date on shells is considered as minimum, age, together with elevation these units above present mean tide sea level (at least 10 m a.s.l.) they may be deposited during Last...
This study analyses the significance of shell morphological variations in venerid clam Tawera gayi , a typical element shallow marine soft bottoms southern South America and most common species recovered from Late Quaternary deposits along Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego. Fossil modern shells different localities around tip were analysed using Elliptic Fourier Analysis (EFA) method. Taking into account palaeontological history this genus hemisphere, EFA was also performed on congeners...
