Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth $\sim$60 \AA, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but absent Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron doping La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result new well-screened features which are missing soft PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, strongly suppressed within 15 $\text{\AA}$...
Nonlinear optical frequency conversion has been challenged to move down the extreme ultraviolet and x-ray region. However, extremely low signals have allowed researchers only perform transmission experiments of gas phase or ultrathin films. Here, we report second harmonic generation (SHG) reflected beam a soft free-electron laser from solid, which is enhanced by resonant effect. The observation revealed that double resonance condition can be met absorption edges for transition metal oxides...
We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser the hard region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ time-resolved magnetic circular dichroism at Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated for total as $τ_\textrm{total} 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. transient state with photo-modulated coupling between 3d and elements is...
We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by means resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect with element specificity. The investigation was conducted at Pt N6,7 and Co M2,3 edges using an x-ray free electron laser. obtained results showed a clear dependence demagnetization time scales: τdemag.Co=80±60 fs τdemag.Pt=640±140 fs. This is explained induced moment atom current flow from layer through interfaces. observed...
The lattice and electronic response in the course of concomitant charge orbital-ordering transition has been investigated for single crystals layered manganites, single-layered ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{1.5}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{4},$ bilayered ${\mathrm{LaSr}}_{2}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7},$ by Raman-scattering spectroscopy. In charge-orbital-ordered state $(T<217$ K ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{1.5}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{4}$ $\ensuremath{\sim}100 \mathrm{K}<T<210$...
A system of Ag nanoparticles placed very close to an Al surface was prepared by depositing Ag-${\mathrm{SiO}}_{2}$ composite film on film. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP's) the were excited attenuated total reflection (ATR) method and light emission from SPP's caused presence measured. The intensity emitted found rapidly decrease as distance between particles increases. From a good qualitative agreement experimental results those electromagnetic calculations, following processes are...
Thin films of \ensuremath{\alpha}-Sn were epitaxially grown on InSb(111)A and InSb(111)B substrates at room temperature. We studied growth modes phase transitions the by using reflection high-energy electron diffraction Auger spectroscopy. The grew in biatomic layer-by-layer modes. Characteristic features for Sn/InSb(111)B due to segregation Sb film surface. Thus, we used Sn/InSb(111)A system examine stability as a function Sn coverage. as-grown surfaces changed irreversibly from...
Raman scattering spectra have been investigated for a single crystal of ${\mathrm{La}}_{1.67}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{NiO}}_{4}$ which shows stripe ordering charge ( ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}230\mathrm{K}$) and spin ${T}_{\mathrm{s}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}180\mathrm{K}$). Upon the ordering, activated phonon peaks grow with evolution modulation amplitude, while electronic continuum metallic state abruptly disappears....
Neutralization and electronic excitation during low-energy ion-surface scattering have been investigated from a combination of experiments molecular-orbital energy calculations based on the discrete variational X\ensuremath{\alpha} method. It is found that variety transitions are mediated by molecular orbitals violent collision or short-lived chemisorption state ions, which may not be inferred atomic isolated projectiles. The rare-gas such as ${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{+}$, capture...
In order to realize superconductivity in cuprates with the ${T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-type structure, not only chemical substitution (Ce doping) but also postgrowth reduction annealing is necessary. case of thin films, however, well-designed alone without Ce doping can induce cuprates. unveil origin Ce-undoped cuprates, we have performed bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission and soft absorption spectroscopy on superconducting nonsuperconducting...
Experiments of time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (Tr-XMCD) and resonant scattering at a beamline BL07LSU in SPring-8 with time-resolution under 50 ps are presented. A micro-channel plate is utilized for the Tr-XMCD measurements nearly normal incidence both partial electron total fluorescence yield (PEY TFY) modes L2,3 absorption edges 3d transition-metals soft region. The ultrafast photo-induced demagnetization within observed on dynamics material FePt thin films, having...
Operando spectroscopy is a potent tool for characterizing heterogeneous catalysts under working conditions. In this study, ambient-pressure hard X-ray photoelectron (AP-HAXPES) of an industrial copper–zinc–alumina methanol synthesis catalyst was performed to reveal the surface chemical states and adsorbed intermediates during catalytic reaction. situ formation metallic Cu particles detected by operando AP-HAXPES reduction process hydrogen atmosphere, as well incorporation Al atoms into zinc...
Conventionally organic carbon is assumed to be the limiting nutrient of regrowth. Inorganic phosphorus in comparison should a good candidate for regrowth control because it can measured and controlled. It may able limit drinking water distribution systems. In order clarify whether inorganic really or regrowth, three kinds bioassays were performed: 1. different combinations acetate, phosphorus, other nutrients added test tubes containing pure water, 2. tap dilutions with 3. addition all but...
In periodic systems, electronic wave functions of the eigenstates exhibit periodically modulated Bloch phases and are characterized by their numbers $\mathbf{k}$. We theoretically address effects phase in general layered materials with a stacking shift. When interlayer shift vector $\mathbf{k}$ satisfy certain conditions, transitions electrons prohibited interference phase. specify manifolds space where hybridization states between layers is suppressed accord These manifolds, named...
