Microglia coordinate various functions in the central nervous system ranging from removing synaptic connections, to maintaining brain homeostasis by monitoring neuronal function, and clearing protein aggregates across lifespan. Here we investigated whether increased microglial phagocytic activity that clears amyloid can also cause pathological synapse loss. We identified TDP-43, a DNA-RNA binding encoded Tardbp gene, as strong regulator of phagocytosis. Mice lacking TDP-43 microglia exhibit...

This systematic review analyzed data from studies examining memory and cognitive function in subjects with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), compared exposed to trauma (but without PTSD). Based on analysis of 21 articles published English 1968 2009, the conclusion is that individuals PTSD, particularly veterans, show signs impairment when tested neuropsychological instruments, more so than who do not have PTSD.

Our objective was to test the hypothesis that changes in body mass index (BMI) are associated with clinical course of ALS. We examined relationships between BMI at first visit and up a two-year follow-up, multiple variables related ALS: age onset, rate progression motor symptoms, survival. Baseline classified according World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Changes were as loss >1 unit, no change, or gain unit. results showed baseline not In contrast, over two years significantly shorter...

Cognitive impairment secondary to frontal lobe atrophy exists in 40-60% of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) cases. We aimed determine the prevalence frontal-lobe mediated behavioral and ascertain its relationship cognitive impairment.Two-hundred twenty five patients diagnosed with sporadic ALS were evaluated for dysfunction using Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe), a validated measure used examine behaviors, specifically apathy, executive disinhibition; total behavior score is also...

Abstract Background Compared with other major dementias, very little is known about the medical and environmental risk factors associated frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In this study, we evaluated disorders FTD in a veteran population. Methods The records of 845 consecutive veterans who were for cognitive and/or behavioral complaints at clinic an academic center between March 1, 2003, June 30, 2008, reviewed 554 patients received diagnosis dementia. Several metabolic derangements associated with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM) have been a better outcome in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including hyperlipidemia and obesity. Here, we tested the hypothesis that DM would positive effect on motor cognitive findings of ALS.We compared data from ALS patients pre-morbid (ALS-DM; n = 175) versus without (ALS; 2196) regard to age onset, rate progression, survival, neuropsychological test performance. The onset was later for women, Caucasians...

Environmental enrichment is experimental paradigm that has shown promising anti-depressive memory-enhancing effects pre-clinical studies. However, its clinical utility remained limited due to lack effective implementation strategies. Objective: The primary objective this study was evaluate usability (tolerability...

Abstract Memory formation is a complex cognitive function regulated by coordinated synaptic and nuclear processes in neurons. In mammals, it controlled multiple molecular activators suppressors, including the key signalling regulator, protein phosphatase 1 (PP1). Here, we show that memory control PP1 involves miR-183/96/182 cluster its selective regulation during formation. Inhibiting mouse brain, or training on an object recognition task similarly increases expression hippocampus. Mimicking...
