Abstract Human bocavirus (HBoV) infection is reported worldwide and may cause severe respiratory tract infections. The aim of the present study was to assess prevalence HBoV, other viral pathogens, in a 2‐year retrospective children admitted hospital, investigate whether loads HBoV DNA were associated with severity infection. Between April 2007 March 2009, 891 samples from 760 hospital acute tested for presence viruses by real‐time PCR or direct immunofluorescence testing. detected using...
Summary We report the isolation of emerging fungal pathogen Rasamsonia aegroticola , which belongs argillacea species complex, from a respiratory sample patient with cystic fibrosis. This filamentous fungus, resembling members Penicillium and Paecilomyces spp., was identified by morphology confirmed DNA sequence analysis. Susceptibility pattern showed high minimal inhibitory concentration voriconazole amphotericin B but low caspofungin, micafungin itraconazole.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae strains can be classified into two major genetic groups, P1 type 1 (P1-1) and 2 (P1-2). It remains unknown if clinical manifestations of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in children differ between the genotypes. We aimed to determine M. genotype is associated with severity LRTI children. Medical charts 420 (≤15 years old) signs acute who were PCR positive for from pharyngeal swabs a recent epidemic analyzed. used culture pyrosequencing approach genotyping...
Cohort studies on physical fitness (PF) in former extremely preterm children are scarce and yield conflicting results. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of birth PF school-age with a focus bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).Eighty school-aged were enrolled longitudinal cohort study. Fifty born (<completed 28 weeks gestation): 19 had BPD, 31 did not; 30 term-born healthy included as controls. They monitored annually throughout primary school (ages 7-14 years) eight annual...
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive lethal hereditary disorder among whites. Survival of patients with CF has progressively improved over last four decades. As life expectancy been greatly extended, complications like osteopenia and CF-related diabetes mellitus (CFRDM) occur. In our article, a new management these two described.Gastrointestinal tract, exocrine pancreas liver are also affected in CF.Maintaining good nutrition while treating pancreatic insufficiency,...
Background: New therapeutics modalities in the last decades have increased survival rate of patients with severe forms congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) resulting late morbidity. Surviving children remain at high risk developing long-term pulmonary consequences. There are limited data regarding lung function (LF) CDH survivors school age. Aims and objectives: to assess LF Methods: treated University Medical Centre Ljubljana from 2002 2010 were recruited study....
Background: Children with congenial heart defects (CHD) are prone to suffer from various respiratory conditions. Airway diseases can be associated developmental abnormalities or issue surgical complications. Flexible bronchoscopy (FB) offers effective diagnostic and treatment options in these patients. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence characteristics of airway CHD children. Methods: Medical records review study patients treated for at University children's hospital...
Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) can be categorised into two genotypes, P1 type 1 (MP1) and 2 (MP2), based on the DNA sequence of adhesion protein. It remains unknown if clinical manifestations lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in children differ between genotypes. Objectives: To determine MP genotype is associated with severity LRTI children. Methods: Medical charts (≤ 15 years-old) signs who tested positive for by PCR from pharyngeal swabs 2014 were...
Introduction: Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulator therapies have shown unprecedented health improvements in persons with cystic (pwCF). Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ELX/TEZ/IVA) therapy has been reported to improve several clinical outcomes these patients. Only limited data is currently available on treatment related lung ultrasound (LUS) asessment. We aimed compare LUS chest imaging at initiation and 6 months of treatment. Methods. Twenty (10...
Background: Structured and appropriately timed approach to end-of-life care decision-making has become an important part of in children with terminal illnesses. Despite its importance, many families medical teams face these issues fare late. Objective: Our aim was retrospectively evaluate decisions (EOLCD) made who died a university hospital9s respiratory high dependency unit. Methods: Medical files 14-year period were analyzed for the relevant history EOLCD process....
Background: Recent epidemiological data associated enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) to severe respiratory tract infections (RTI) in children. Aim: To determine whether children afflicted by EV-D68 infection suffer a more disease course than peers infected with other enteroviruses (EV). Methods: Medical charts of hospitalised for RTI and who were PCR EV positive nasopharyngeal swabs the period from June October 2014 analysed. Clinical patients compared those types EV....
Background: In 2014 several outbreaks of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infection were reported worldwide. Aim: To assess the characteristics hospitalized patients during EV-D68 outbreak, from June to October 2014, at University Children9s Hospital Ljubljana, Slovenia. Methods: Data children who tested positive for by PCR nasopharyngeal swabs, cerebrospinal fluid or stool in aforementioned period analyzed. Results: Out 282 samples, a total 18 (6.4%) (median age 4.1 yrs,...
