Abstract Background Otolaryngologists are among the highest risk for COVID‐19 exposure. Methods This is a cross‐sectional, survey‐based, national study evaluating academic otolaryngologists. Burnout, anxiety, distress, and depression were assessed by single‐item Mini‐Z Burnout Assessment, 7‐item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, 15‐item Impact of Event 2‐item Patient Health Questionnaire, respectively. Results A total 349 physicians completed survey. Of them, 165 (47.3%) residents 212...
Nonphysician health care workers are involved in high-risk patient during the COVID-19 pandemic, placing them at high risk of mental burden. The impact this crucial population has not been studied thus far. Thus, objective study is to assess psychosocial well-being these providers.National cross-sectional online survey (no control group).Academic otolaryngology programs United States. We distributed a nonphysician departments across States. incorporated variety validated assessment tools...
Racial and ethnic patient health disparities are well-documented within surgical specialties; however, an intersectional lens studying the combined impact of multiple identities has not been evaluated in this context. We aim to explore multiplicative effect race, ethnicity, sex on postoperative complications across a variety otolaryngologic procedures. Cross-sectional analysis retrospective data. A multi-institutional cohort using National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) data...
Background BC RNAs and the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) are translational repressors that have been implicated in control of local synthesis at synapse. Work with BC1 Fmr1 animal models has revealed phenotypical consequences resulting from absence either RNA or FMRP remarkably similar. To establish functional interactions between is important for our understanding how regulates neuronal excitability. Methodology/Principal Findings We generated BC1−/− Fmr1−/− double knockout...
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted medical training. Here we assess its effect on head and neck surgical education.Surveys were sent to current accredited program directors trainees the impact of fellow's experience employment search. Current fellows' operative logs compared with those 2018 2019 graduates.Despite reduction in volume, 82% American Head Neck Society fellows have reached number major operations support certification. When surveyed, 86% deemed their fellow ready...
Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact transoral robotic surgery (TORS) compared nonrobotic (NRS) on overall survival in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). We performed a retrospective patients with HPV+ and HPV− OPSCC undergoing TORS or NRS neck dissection using National Cancer Database from years 2010–2016. Among our cohort, 3167 (58.1%) underwent 2288 (41.9%) TORS. demonstrated better than (HPV+ patients: aHR 0.74, p = 0.02; 0.58, < 0.01). Subsite analysis...
Abstract Background While other otolaryngology subspecialties have established female authorship trends, there is no comprehensive study within head and neck surgery (HNS). Methods Five researchers recorded the gender identity of first senior authors from HNS subspecialty papers (head oncology, endocrine surgery, salivary gland pathology, microsurgery) derived 10 journals in oncology years 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022. Results From 3457 articles, 6901 unique author identities were analyzed. Female...
This Viewpoint discusses how a national interview calendar and initial invitation date may add some reassurance for applicants residency programs the upcoming otolaryngology application cycle.
There is growing attention toward the implications of race and ethnicity on health disparities within otolaryngology. While an established predictor adverse head neck oncologic outcomes, there paucity in literature studies employing national, multi-institutional data to assess impact autograft surgery.
Abstract Background De‐escalation strategies for newly‐diagnosed p16‐positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (p16+ OPSCC), aim to reduce treatment‐related morbidity without compromising disease control. One strategy is neoadjuvant cisplatin and docetaxel chemotherapy (NAC + S) before transoral robotic surgery, with pathology‐based risk‐adapted adjuvant treatment. Methods We examined the recurrence‐free survival (RFS) patients who received NAC S. Results Comparing outcomes in 103...
