Abstract Each year, billions of songbirds cross large ecological barriers during their migration. Understanding how they perform this incredible task is crucial to predict global change may threaten the safety such journeys. Earlier studies based on radar suggested that most deserts in intermittent flights at high altitude, stopping desert day, while recent tracking with light loggers diurnal prolongation nocturnal and common non-stop for some species. We analyzed intensity temperature data...

The decrease of Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana in Western Europe over the last five decades has caused serious concern for survival this species Sweden. In order to find out migration routes and wintering location, we equipped several males with geologgers. Our data show annual cycles migrations routes, grounds time schedules seven re-trapped birds. area West Africa is savannah woodland a mountainous landscape Mali Guinea. follow more or less great circle between breeding areas. The only remaining Ortolan Buntings in the province of Närke are about 15 singing males Kvismaren valley. We studied this small population intensively during May–June, 2011. found that birds depend on bare soil two kinds: potato fields turning green early July and open ground underneath birch elder vegetation an old bog. Thus spring sowing may be a “trap” as look optimal when Ortolans arrive May will few weeks turn become less suitable for breeding. In 2011, 6 pairs likely raised young...

Ortolan Buntings Emberiza hortulana are rapidly decreasing in Sweden. Changes agricultural practices the main reason. Landscape simplification due to removal of semi-natural elements leads a lack breeding habitats. Furthermore, intensive artificial fertiliser applications and advanced equipment technology, crops grow both taller denser than 50 years ago. In Kvismaren, south central Sweden, have been studied since 2009. Here, we focus on one question: what defines good foraging microhabitat?...

The skylark Alauda arvensis population has declined in Sweden. breeding silage fields fails and the success autumn crops is disputed. Therefore, I decided to study utilisation of crop Kvismaren, central largest accessible field was selected (40 ha) get as tough conditions possible for foraging. could conclude that nests were evenly placed, youngsters developed normally occupancy about 80 pairs or territories per km2. skylarks searched food much inside outside large field. flight distances on...

During field work on foraging of the Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana in a small and isolated population at Kvismaren county Örebro south Sweden, two females, nesting 1,250 m apart were observed to be mate-guarded by same colour-ringed male. Although male commuted between nests, none females seemed obtain any substantial help from him when feeding young. Polygyni has been reported only once before this species, namely seventy-five years ago, also behaved similar manner that we Kvismaren.

I have analysed 1,777 moult records of the Reed Buntings Emberiza schoeniclus, collected at Kvismaren, central Sweden, in 1973–1995. When evaluating with regression techniques it is important that data are representative primarily respect to start and end period. Otherwise a too short period obtained. The mean duration was estimated be 63 days, starting on 10 July. females started 6 days later finished 3 than males. Weather conditions significantly affected performance. variation annual...

In 2015 we studied the relative importance of silage and cereal crops as breeding habitat for skylark Alauda arvensis. 2014 had found that skylarks failed to breed successfully in grass fields. We compared density between one organic conventional farm, c. 100 ha each, at Kvismaren valley south Sweden (approx. 59.2°N; 15.4°E). The densities were similar all crops: 83 territories/km2 75 (spring sown) or 80 (autumn cereal. However, harvest early June July destroyed, previous year, almost nests,...

The wing moult of the White Wagtail Motacilla a. alba and Yellow M. f .flava has been recorded since 1973 at Kvismaren, central Sweden. Based on data from 558 78 Wagtails in active duration former was estimated 55–65 days latter 35–40 days. sequence same both species. only significant difference speed moult. reason for this strategy is probably migration destination two arrives later than Wagtail, stays a shorter time Sweden starts towards tropical Africa just before finishing middle August....
