A prospective study was undertaken of 22 patients with chronic hyperplastic candidosis and 50 age sex matched individuals no evidence oral mucosal disease. The adhesion of Candida albicans to buccal epithelial cells (EEC) from four healthy dentate men was studied in vitro I wk before, during and after a course systemic fluconazole (50 mg once daily for 1 wk). The effect of 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate on in vitro adhesion Candida albicans to buccal epithelial cells (BHC) was studied 12 healthy subjects and patients with diabetes mellitus. Buccal epithelial cells (BEC) from 12 patients with diabetes mellitus and age- sex-matched non-diabetic subjects were tested in vitro for adhesion of Candida albicans following exposure to nystatin both vivo. Adhesion was significantly reduced (P < 0.002) the diabetic after nystatin, but reduction variable (5.0-50.7% control 0.5-48.4% subjects) equivalent between two groups.
