The continuous progress of global manufacturing and anthropogenic activities has resulted in excessive environmental metallic pollution, particularly with rare earth elements (REEs) which have become a prevalent issue concern due to their high toxicity widespread existence. REEs-contaminated soils could ruin agriculture by inducing plant physiology disturbances various crops that are considered the principal link human food chain. main purpose present work is assess phytotoxicity two light...
Rare earth elements (REEs) present a group of nonessential metals for the growth and development plants. At high concentrations, they can induce internal stress disturb physiological biochemical mechanisms in The potential uptake lanthanum (La) cerium (Ce) by horticultural plant Helianthus annuus effect these on its growth, absorption macroelements, contents phenolic compounds flavonoids were assessed. plants exposed to 0, 1, 2.5, 5, 10 µM La Ce 14 days. results showed remarkable...
A synthesis of the work carried out on Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) characterisation is given, covering articles published over last 50 years. Data OMW found in literature are summarised and correlations between them with phenolic compounds content sought. This permits characteristics an to be estimated from one simple measurement: concentration. model based characterisations accounting 6 countries was developed along a for Portuguese OMW. The statistical analysis obtained indicates that...
Soil contamination by toxic trace metal elements, like barium (Ba), may stimulate various undesirable changes in the metabolic activity of plants. The plant responses are fast and with, direct or indirect, generation reactive oxygen species (ROS). To cope with stress imposed ROS production, plants developed a dual cellular system composed enzymatic non-enzymatic players that convert ROS, their by-products, into stable nontoxic molecules. assess Ba response two Brassicaceae (Brassica juncea,...
Phragmites australis are commonly used in constructed wetlands either for domestic sewage or industrial effluents treatment. The aerobic mineralization mechanisms of Acid Orange 7, AO7, a Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland (VFCW) planted with P. suggest that AO7 degradation pathway may involve enzymes like peroxidases (POD), known to degrade some recalcitrant pollutants. In this context, the aim study was evaluate role POD extracted from VFCW leaves decolourization which belongs very...
São Domingos sulfide mine was shut down more than 50 years ago leaving behind eroded and depositional surfaces due to acid drainage (AMD). The aim of this study assess six selected sites subjected AMD, considered phytotoxic regions characterized by vegetation scarcity. Two main criteria, nature composition soluble fractions total chemistry surficial products related jarosites presence, enabled set up an overall dichotomy between superficial proximal/discharge distal/sedimentation areas. Wet...
Abstract The detoxification of agro‐industrial effluents using superabsorbent polymers is a new and innovative process. Olive mill wastewater constitutes major environmental problem in Mediterranean countries due to the large volumes generated, seasonaliry industry, high content polyphenols organic matter. application allows olive be used as fertilizer, it immobilized, increasing biological activity that decreases its phytotoxicity, thus making water, matter mineral usable for plant...
This work concentrates on the pyrolysis and char characterization of a refuse-derived fuel (RDF), produced from municipal solid waste, five its components, namely, nonpackaging paper, food, textile, low-density polyethylene film, LDPE, packaging polypropylene wastes. Specifically, this characterizes physically chemically materials, examines oxidation patterns RDF components using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) quartz reactor (QR), respectively, evaluates reactivity toward oxygen selected...
Anaerobic digestion of olive mill wastewater (OMW) in admixture with anaerobically digested piggery effluent (ADPE) was investigated. Successive volumetric increases OMW ranging from 8 to 91% were mixed ADPE and treated through an upflow anaerobic filter promote gradual adaptation the microbial consortium. The response digester positive, only at v/v lower reactor performance obtained, suggesting that a concentration on order 83% highest terms efficiency stability reactor. At this inlet...
This study focuses on the evaluation of adequacy and sustainability a constructed wetland (CW), with vertical flow (VF) design to treat strongly coloured textile wastewater. Secondly an accidental AO7 overloaded discharge (700 mg l−1) was studied. A set three similar VFCW beds (3 × 1 m2), operating in series, allowed also efficient treatment heavy loaded wastewaters. The treated effluent quality enables water reuse for irrigation purposes or within process.
Abstract Combined anaerobic digestion of olive mill wastewater (OMW) and piggery effluent (PE) was performed to evaluate the operational conditions required develop a feasible method OMW treatment. The effect influent concentration composition on performance an up-flow filter treating mixture these wastes investigated by gradually increasing proportion in feed from 8% 83% volume. Organic loads ranged 3 10 kg COD m−3 d−1, with substrate organic load ratio (OMW COD/PE COD) varying...
