Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) evolves the accumulation of risk factors. Relevant animal models to identify potential therapeutic targets and test novel therapies for HFPEF are missing. We induced hypertension hyperlipidemia in landrace pigs ( n = 8) by deoxycorticosteroneacetate (DOCA, 100 mg/kg, 90-day-release subcutaneous depot) a Western diet (WD) containing high amounts salt, fat, cholesterol, sugar 12 wk. Compared weight-matched controls 8), DOCA/WD-treated...
Objectives: The results from the recent Targeted Temperature Management trial raised question whether cooling or merely avoidance of fever mediates better neurologic outcome in resuscitated patients. As temperature per se is a major determinant cardiac function, we characterized effects hyperthermia (40.5°C), normothermia (38.0°C), and mild hypothermia (33.0°C) on left ventricular contractile function healthy pigs compared them with dobutamine infusion. Design: Animal study. Setting: Large...
Abstract Background Cardiac power output (CPO), derived from the product of cardiac and mean aortic pressure, is an important yet underexploited parameter for hemodynamic monitoring critically ill patients in intensive-care unit (ICU). The conductance catheter-derived pressure-volume loop area reflects left ventricular stroke work (LV SW). Dividing LV SW by time, a measure min − 1 obtained sharing same as CPO (W). We aimed to validate marker under various inotropic states. Methods...
Mild hypothermia (MH) decreases left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic capacitance. We sought to clarify whether this results from incomplete relaxation.Ten anaesthetized pigs were cooled normothermia (NT, 38 °C) MH (33 °C). LV pressure (LVPed), volume (LVVed) and pressure-volume relationships (EDPVRs) determined during stepwise right atrial pacing. capacitance (i.e. LVVed at LVPed of 10 mmHg, VPed10) was derived the EDPVR. Pacing-induced changes diastolic indices (LVPed, analysed as a function...
Application of therapeutic mild hypothermia in patients after resuscitation, often accompanied by myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, and systemic inflammation may impact on cardiac rhythm. We therefore tested susceptibility to atrial arrhythmias during hyperthermia (HT, 40.5°C), normothermia (NT, 38.0°C), (MH, 33.0°C).Nine healthy, anesthetized closed-chest landrace pigs were instrumented with a quadripolar stimulation catheter the high right atrium decapolar coronary sinus....
Experimental data indicate that stimulation of the nitric oxide-soluble guanylate cyclase(sGC)-cGMP-PKG pathway can increase left ventricular (LV) capacitance via phosphorylation myofilamental protein titin. We aimed to test whether acute pharmacological sGC with BAY 41-8543 would LV titin in healthy and deoxycorticosteroneacetate (DOCA)-induced hypertensive pigs. Nine Landrace pigs 7 DOCA-induced hypertension concentric hypertrophy were acutely instrumented measure end-diastolic...
After acute myocardial infarction (AMI), patients are at risk of sudden cardiac death. The VEST trial failed to show a reduction in arrhythmic mortality AMI with an LVEF ≤ 35% prescribed WCD, having lower-than-expected WCD wearing compliance. aim was investigate on outcomes real-world Austrian cohort good A retrospective analysis all eligible according the inclusion and exclusion criteria between 2010 2020 performed. In total, 105 (64 ± 11 years, 12% female; 28 6%) received for median 69 (1;...
Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO₂) involves breathing 100% oxygen under elevated ambient pressure in a hyperbaric chamber, thereby dissolving the plasma. This results an increase of arterial partial (pO₂). Though well established experimental studies, HBO₂ treatment for ischemic stroke is still discussion. From 2002-2014 (2.2 bar, 90 minutes one/day; average number per patient: 4.7) was applied 49 consecutive patients (32 males, 17 females, mean age: 68.8 years, range 31.2 - 83.9) with acute...
Abstract Development and progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) is driven by comorbidities such as arterial hypertension diabetes mellitus. In animal models chronic hyperglycaemia, AF has been proposed to be triggered oxidative stress, apoptosis fibrosis. Acute glycosylation CaMKII associated with increased susceptibility arrhythmias in acute hyperglycaemia. However, the proarrhythmogenic effect hyperglycaemia not investigated. Nine healthy, anesthetized pigs (54 ± 6 kg) were instrumented...
This study examined the effects of incremental lower body negative pressure (LBNP) from −15 to −45 mmHg on hemodynamic regulation using invasive pressure-volume assessment in closed-chest pigs. Graded preload reduction via LBNP induces left ventricular (LV) pressures while increasing LV suction and thus allowing ventricle eject below equilibrium volume at end systole. Accordingly, LBNP-induced central hypovolemia is associated with increased diastolic suction.
Infective endocarditis, particularly after implanting valve prostheses, poses significant surgical challenges, often requiring complex interventions. We describe a case of 37-year-old male with Staphylococcus aureus unsuccessfully treated mechanical prostheses. Continued infection led to the destruction intervalvular fibrous body, necessitating Commando procedure involving radical debridement and replacement both aortic mitral valves patch reconstruction. Prosthesis selection remains...
We report the surgical repair of a penetrating aortic ulcer in distal ascending aorta close to brachiocephalic trunk, by supracoronary and hemiarch replacement via full sternotomy. The procedure is performed under moderate hypothermia with bilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion.
Summary Background Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been a routine procedure for quite some years. Advancements in technology and experience have enabled its use even more challenging anatomies. Case report An 83-year-old female patient with severe pathology due to chronic type A dissection after supracoronary ascending repair was suffering from progressive dyspnea recurrent cardiac decompensations stenosis. She successfully treated transapical TAVI by our interdisciplinary...
Four hours after surgery for aortic valve stenosis and tricuspid regurgitation, an unknown foreign body was present on the routine chest X-ray. We performed re-sternotomy in order to retrieve this body. The easy move fluoroscopy but we could not extract it. concluded that a subdiaphragmatic location. As consequence, gastroscopy. A white, frothy mass (similar undissolved effervescent tablet) within ulcerated lesion seen partially extracted.
Summary Background The cause of pericarditis is manifold. It can occur as a result various diseases but may also be triggered by drugs. However, the data on drug-induced are still scarce. Case report A 64-year-old female hypertensive patient with rheumatoid arthritis for 20 years presented thoracic pain and recurrent pericardial pleural effusions. For treatment effusions, received glucocorticoids colchicine in addition to basic therapy, has only recently been expanded include etanercept. On...
Objectives: The hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) can be used to increase the content in blood and is therefore a useful treatment several diseases such as: ischemia, wound healing problems, gas gangrene or air embolism. Successful of HBO ischemic insult still controversial. aim this study was evaluate patients with neurological deficits after cardiac surgeries, which were consequently treated HBO.
Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in humans and associated with an increased risk of stroke, morbidity death. Arterial hypertension (HT) found 60–80% AF patients, independent predictor new-onset contributes to progression via unknown mechanisms. We previously established a large animal model rapid atrial pacing (RAP) induced combined DOCA (desoxycorticosterone acetate) HT showing that increases stability. In this study, we aimed investigate how...
