Abstract. This work presents the outline and so far completed design of Aalto-1 science mission. is a multi-payload remote-sensing nanosatellite, built almost entirely by students. The satellite aims for 500–900 km sun-synchronous orbit includes an accurate attitude dynamics control unit, UHF/VHF housekeeping S-band data links, GPS unit positioning (radio NORAD TLE's are planned to be used as backup). It has three specific payloads: spectral imager based on piezo-actuated Fabry–Perot...

Dragliner [1, 2] is an ESA funded study to define the requirements and a preliminary design of passive Coulomb Drag based deorbit system capable bringing down LEO spacecrafts in order magnitude shorter time than current regulations for re-entry spacecraft (25 years), while using significantly less resources compared traditional deorbiting methods like chemical or electric propulsion. Other main are low mass independence from resources. The led by Finnish Meteorological Institute, other...

When a high-voltage charged tether is put into streaming space plasma, the tether’s electric field disturbs flow of plasma ions and thereby taps momentum from [1-4]. The effect called electrostatic Coulomb drag. One application solar wind sail which uses to generate interplanetary propulsion [1, 2]. Another Plasma Brake [3, 4] ionospheric ram drag that slowly de-orbits satellite. Both positive negative polarities work. physics different, but net transfer in both cases. reasons are...

Abstract. We use the connection between auroral sightings and rapid geomagnetic field variations in a concept for Regional Auroral Forecast (RAF) service. The service is based on statistical relationships near-real-time alerts issued by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center magnetic time derivative (dB∕dt) values measured five MIRACLE magnetometer stations located Finland at sub-auroral latitudes. Our database contains dB∕dt observations from years 2002–2012. These data are used to create set...

Abstract Rapid magnetic fluctuations are known to be closely linked the high‐latitude geomagnetic activity, in particular, pulsations and subtorms. Increasing amount of commercial activity arctic regions requires better monitoring capability improved understanding on effects hazards infrastructure. In this study, we analyze rapid, 1‐s Greenland. To measure high‐frequency auroral oval polar cap, use high time resolution data 1 s from 12 stations covering a large latitudinal range 64 84...
