Abstract This study investigated the significance of friendship for scientific reasoning. We had two main goals: First, assess whether collaborations between friends fostered greater development reasoning than acquaintances, and second, identify which features friends' collaborative dialogues mediated their problem solving accuracy. Fifth graders collaborated on isolation variables problems varying difficulty with either a friend or an acquaintance. The results showed that adolescents paired...
Abstract Contemporary science is a field that becoming increasingly computational. Today’s scientists not only leverage computational tools to conduct their investigations, they often must contribute the design of for specific research. From education perspective, students learn authentic practices, use trade. This necessity in has shaped recent K–12 standards including Next Generation Science Standards, which explicitly mention and simulations. These standards, particular, have gone further...
We use numerical hydrodynamical simulations of early structure formation in a ΛCDM universe to investigate the spin temperature and 21 cm brightness diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) prior epoch cosmic reionization, at z ≲ 20. In absence any radiative heating, collisions between neutral hydrogen atoms can efficiently decouple from CMB only dense minihalos filaments. Shock-heated gas shines emission, surrounded by cooler visible absorption. case warm, mostly IGM, produced here X-ray emission...
Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) permeates every aspect of our daily lives and is no longer a subject reserved for select few in higher education but essential knowledge that youth need the future. Much unknown about level AI age developmentally appropriate high school, let alone how to teach even younger learners. In this theoretical paper, we discuss design game-based learning environment school education, drawing upon insights gained from prior cognitive interview study at STEM...
Computational thinking plays a central and ubiquitous role in many science disciplines is increasingly prevalent instruction learning experiences. This study empirically examines the computational skills that are particular to engaging then tests if these predictive of over course one semester. Using sample from 600 middle school students, we provide psychometric properties for assessment demonstrate this construct consistent predictor content learning. The results relationship between...
Abstract Many herpetofauna species have been introduced outside of their native range. MtDNA barcoding is regularly used to determine the provenance such populations. The alpine newt has across Netherlands, United Kingdom and Ireland. However, geographical mtDNA structure natural range still incompletely understood certain regions are severely undersampled. We collect sequence data over seven hundred individuals, from both main new insights our extended phylogeography that 1) haplotypes...
NGC 205, a close satellite of the M31 galaxy, is our nearest example dwarf elliptical galaxy. Photometric and kinematic observations suggest 205 undergoing tidal distortion from its interaction with M31. Despite earlier attempts, orbit progenitor properties are not well known. We perform an optimized search for these unknowns by combining genetic algorithm restricted N-body simulations interaction. Coupled photometric as constraints, this allows effective exploration parameter space....
The United States’ Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) elevate engineering design to the same stature as scientific inquiry, calling on science teachers engage students in practices solve real-world problems. In response, researchers and curriculum developers designed studied Virtual Engineering Internships (VEIs) outlined by NGSS, alleviate some of logistical conceptual burden for unfamiliar with instruction. Nevertheless, VEIs still require striking shifts way teaching learning...
The colubrid snake Phalotris nigrilatus is endemic to San Pedro Department (Paraguay) and known from a very few historical specimens. We analyze morphological variation geographic distribution of P. on the basis currently available specimens, including long-overlooked museum material. Also, we briefly report for first time its live coloration behavior recently collected individual. Results analyses lead slight revision diagnosis an argument higher conservation priority this species.
We have designed an inquiry-based laboratory activity on transiting extrasolar planets for introductory college-level astronomy class. The was with the intent of simultaneously teaching science process skills and factual content about transits light curves. In activity, groups two to four students each formulate a specific question design carry out investigation using table-top model star orbiting planet. Each group then presents their findings other in final presentation, instructors...
We describe the design and elements of implementation Akamai Maui Short Course (AMSC). The AMSC contains four full inquiry activities each which builds on those previous: Camera Obscura Sun Shadows, Lenses Refraction, Color Light, Adaptive Optics Demonstrator. In addition we workings two additional strands: 1) Communication, 2) Science, Technology Society. also discuss our assessment methods results.
