Seizure spread into autonomic and respiratory brainstem regions is thought to play an important role in sudden unexpected death epilepsy (SUDEP). As the clinical dataset of cases definite SUDEP available for study grows, evidence points a sequence events that includes postictal apnea, bradycardia, asystole as critical can lead death. One possible link between precipitating seizure seizure-driven laryngospasm sufficient completely obstruct airway extended period, but ictal difficult fully...

Previous studies have evaluated the effects of comorbidity on survival in patients with cancer. We applied Charlson index (CCI) to a cohort laryngeal cancer validate its use and assess prognostic impact age. Our study population consisted 152 who were seen over 10-year period. Patients assigned CCI scores categorized into low- high-grade groups for comparison. Age adjustments performed by adding 1 point score each decade median Low- vs. was valid predictor independent TNM (tumor, nodes,...

Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis: To assess the value of both patient‐ and tumor‐related factors oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in predicting patient outcome, with respect to three primary subsites disease. It was hypothesized that subsite has a significant impact on outcome. Study Design: Historical cohort study. Methods: A chart review conducted 126 patients diagnosed oropharynx over 10‐year period. The divided into following subsites: 1) base tongue, 2) tonsil pillars, 3) uvula, soft...

Abstract The mechanism(s) for sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP) remain(s) unknown, but seizure spread to brainstem areas serving autonomic and respiratory function is critical. In a rat model, we established mechanism SUDEP that involves seizure‐induced laryngospasm obstructive apnea lasting until arrest. We hypothesized DBA/2J mice, which display lethal audiogenic seizures, would be protected from by implanting tracheal T‐tube as surrogate airway. 2 × design, mice were implanted with either...

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) claims the lives of one every thousand epileptic patients each year. Autonomic, cardiac, and respiratory pieces to a mechanistic puzzle have not yet been completely assembled. We propose single sequence causes effects that unifies disparate competitive concepts into algorithm centered on ictal obstructive apnea. Based detailed animal studies are sometimes impossible humans, striking parallels with growing body clinical examples, this framework (1)...

Recovery from unilateral vocal‐fold paralysis is lengthy, unpredictable, and often incomplete, highlighting the need for better treatments of injured recurrent laryngeal nerve. To be able to monitor recovery motion in studies with rats, we developed a procedure quantitative video laryngoscopy. Metastatic carcinoma involving the paranasal sinuses is uncommon. One hundred-sixty seven cases have been published in literature since 1951. Symptoms, signs, and rhinoscopic imaging findings are often nonspecific, diagnosis may be missed for considerable time. Therefore, a high level of suspicion warranted patients with known malignancies presenting persistent or recurrent rhinosinusitis facial complaints.

Audiogenic seizure-prone mice can be protected from seizure-associated death by exposure to an oxygen atmosphere or treatment with selective serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). We have shown previously in a rat model that epileptic seizure activity spread through brainstem areas cause sufficient laryngospasm for obstructive apnea and the period of last long enough respiratory arrest occur. hypothesized both oxygen-rich SSRIs function prolonging time arrest, thus ensuring stops before...
