Measurements are more and required in an increasing variety of human activities to acquire reliable information useful for effectively supporting decision-making processes. Furthermore, the entities whose properties be measured measuring systems becoming increasingly complex, hardly modeled managed. In this rapidly evolving scenario, several issues concerning fundamentals measurement science technology arise. The purpose paper is discuss some aspects crucial question about which evaluation...

Against the tradition, which has considered measurement able to produce pure data on physical systems, unavoidable role played by modeling activity in is increasingly acknowledged, particularly with respect evaluation of uncertainty. This paper characterizes as a knowledge-based process and proposes framework understand function models systematically analyze their influence production results interpretation. To this aim, general model sketched, gives context highlight unavoidable, although...

This paper presents an epidemiological extension of the El Farol Bar problem, where both a social and dimension are present. In model, individual agents making binary decisions-to visit bar or stay home-amidst non-fatal epidemic. The classic dilemma is implemented as agent-based it later explored by sampling parameter space observing resulting behavior. results this analysis suggest that infection could be contained increasing information available in underlying system adjusting its structure.

The concept system around 'quantity' and 'quantity value' is fundamental for measurement science, but some very basic issues are still open on such concepts their relation. This paper argues that quantity values in fact individual quantities, a complementarity exists between measurands values. proposal grounded the analysis of three 'equality' relations: (i) (ii) (iii) quantities A consistent characterization obtained, which then generalized to 'property' 'property value'. also throws light...

A conceptual framework is proposed in which measurement development envisioned as a three-level hierarchically structured process constituted of stages, each one composed activities performed through multiple tasks. The underlying assumptions are that the designed-on-purpose and resources it requires should be justified on pragmatic basis. usefulness methodology then illustrated by applying to an exemplary input-output transfer characteristic analog-to-digital converter case research quality...

In recent years, data sets are steadily growing in size because of the huge sensing, storage, computation, and transmission capabilities offered at very low cost by current Information Technology systems, which increasingly driving ubiquitous acquisition from empirical world. Moreover, massive amounts can be collected efficiently- sometimes zero marginal costs internet. The concept Big Data (BD) epitomizes this phenomenon among experts general public (for an accessible, application-oriented...

Is there a framework common to measurement in both physical and social sciences? The answer this question would determine an important extent the possibility of building shared measurement-related body knowledge across these traditionally separate domains. In paper, we outline processes involved construction use measures that includes instrument design, calibration, ultimately using instrument. A comparison steps two domains reveals (a) formal parallelism, (b) differences way calibration is...
