Abstract. The global climate system experienced a series of drastic changes during the Cenozoic. In Asia, these include transformation from zonal pattern to monsoon-dominated pattern, disappearance typical subtropical aridity, and onset inland deserts. Despite major advances in last two decades characterizing understanding phenomena, disagreements persist relative timing, behaviors underlying causes. This paper addresses issues mainly based on lines evidence. First, we compiled newly...

Interglacials, including the present (Holocene) period, are warm, low land ice extent (high sea level), end-members of glacial cycles. Based on a level definition, we identify eleven interglacials in last 800,000 years, result that is robust to alternative definitions. Data compilations suggest despite spatial heterogeneity, Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5e (last interglacial) and 11c (~400 ka ago) were globally strong (warm), while MIS 13a (~500 was cool at many locations. A step change...

Abstract The mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) is widely recognized as a shift in paleoclimatic periodicity from 41- to 100-kyr cycles, which largely reflects integrated changes global ice volume, sea level, and ocean temperature the marine realm. However, much less known about monsoon-induced terrestrial vegetation change across MPT. Here, on basis of 1.7-million-year δ 13 C record loess carbonates Chinese Loess Plateau, we document unique MPT reflecting dominant 23-kyr before 1.2 Ma...

Abstract. We correlate the China loess and Antarctica ice records to address inter-hemispheric climate link over past 800 ka. The results show a broad coupling between Asian Antarctic climates at glacial-interglacial scale. However, number of decoupled aspects are revealed, among which marine isotope stage (MIS) 13 exhibits strong anomaly compared with other interglacials. It is characterized by unusually positive benthic oxygen (δ18O) carbon (δ13C) values in world oceans, cooler...

Abstract. The last interglaciation (~130 to 116 ka) is a time period with strong astronomically induced seasonal forcing of insolation compared the present. Proxy records indicate significantly different climate that modern, in particular Arctic summer warming and higher eustatic sea level. Because forcings are relatively well constrained, it provides an opportunity test numerical models which used for future prediction. In this paper we compile set model simulations early (130 125 ka),...

Abrupt cooling is observed at the end of interglacials in many paleoclimate records, but mechanism responsible remains unclear. Using model simulations, we demonstrate that there exists a threshold level astronomically induced insolation below which abrupt changes past 800,000 years occur. When decreasing reaches critical value, it triggers strong, weakening Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and cooler mean climate state accompanied by high-amplitude variations lasting for several...

Numerous proxy reconstructions have provided general insight into late Quaternary East Asian Monsoon variability. However, challenges persist in precisely assessing absolute temperature impacts on variations. Here, we use two independent paleothermometers, based bacterial membrane lipids and clumped isotopes of snail shells, the same section western Chinese Loess Plateau to establish a robust land surface record spanning past approximately 21,000 years. Our records consistently reveal (i)...

Abstract The polar oceans play a vital role in regulating atmospheric CO 2 concentrations ( p ) during the Pleistocene glacial cycles. However, despite being largest modern reservoir of respired carbon, impact subarctic Pacific remains poorly understood due to limited records. Abstract. The dominant modes of variability precipitation for the whole China over past millennium and mechanism governing their spatial structure remain unclear. This is mainly due to insufficient high-resolution proxy records in western China. Abstract Identifying the position of Current Warm Period (CWP) in context long‐term climatic trend is vital for understanding impact human activity on climate change. Reconstructions summer temperature and precipitation eight subregions China over past 22,000 years show that CWP these are all lower than Early to Middle Holocene.
