We produced 204 monthly maps of the air–sea CO2 flux in Arctic north 60°N, including Ocean and its adjacent seas, from January 1997 to December 2013 by using a self-organizing map technique. The partial pressure (pCO2) surface water data were obtained shipboard underway measurements or calculated alkalinity total inorganic carbon samples. Subsequently, we investigated basin-wide distribution seasonal interannual variability fluxes. 17-year annual mean shows that all areas seas net sinks....
Abstract. Air–sea CO2 fluxes over the Pacific Ocean are known to be characterized by coherent large-scale structures that reflect not only ocean subduction and upwelling patterns, but also combined effects of wind-driven gas exchange biology. On largest scales, a large net influx into extratropics is associated with robust seasonal cycle, efflux from tropics substantial interannual variability. In this work, we have synthesized estimates air–sea flux variety products, drawing upon approaches...
[1] Ocean acidification resulting from increases in present and future atmospheric CO2 levels could seriously affect diverse coastal oceanic ecosystems. In this work, we determine that a significant trend ocean is superposed on the large seasonal interannual variabilities of acidity surface waters off south coast Honshu, Japan, based our repeated observations partial pressure (pCO2), total inorganic carbon (TCO2), pH. Multiple regression analysis TCO2 as function temperature, salinity,...
AbstractWe estimated long-term trends of ocean acidification in surface waters latitudinal zones from 3°N to 33°N along the repeat hydrographic line at 137°E western North Pacific Ocean. Estimates were based on observational records oceanic CO2 partial pressure and related properties over last two decades. The computed pH time series both for 25 yr winter (late January.early February) 21 summer (June.July) exhibited significant decreasing extensive subtropical equatorial zones, with...
Abstract. A strong oxygen-deficient layer is located in the upper layers of tropical Pacific Ocean and deeper North Pacific. Processes related to climate change (upper-ocean warming, reduced ventilation) are expected ocean oxygen nutrient inventories. In most basins, a decrease (“deoxygenation”) an increase nutrients have been observed subsurface layers. Deoxygenation trends not linear there could be multiple influences on variability. Here time series since 1950 were investigated at 50 300...
Abstract Half‐century‐long observations at the 137°E repeat hydrographic section across western North Pacific have been analyzed to demonstrate remotely forced decadal physical and biogeochemical variability of Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) over last 40 years. During unstable periods Kuroshio Extension (KE) that lagged warm phase Decadal Oscillation by 3–4 years, high regional eddy activity reduced formation rate salinity STMW in its main region south KE. At Japan, decreasing southwestward...
Abstract. The impact of landwater was assessed using salinity-normalized Total Alkalinity observations. observational data included surface carbonate parameters from decades surveys conducted by volunteer cargo ships and research vessels in the Northwest Pacific. Statistical processes, such as re-gridding Fourier regression, used a previous study were also applied this to improve spatiotemporal resolution. First, seawater area affected identified an Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis...
Abstract During the period 1954–2014, concentrations of dissolved oxygen (O 2 ) in Oyashio region western subarctic North Pacific has been oscillating over bidecadal timescales and significantly decreasing isopycnal layer spanning σ θ = 26.6–27.5 kg/m 3 . The cycles oscillation (16.4–19.6 years) are almost consistent synchronized within 1 year this density probably controlled by nodal tidal cycle 18.6 years and/or atmospheric forcing. mean rate long‐term decrease is highest (−0.70 ± 0.06...
The Japan Meteorological Agency has acquired dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration data each year since 1967 along the 137°E repeat section in western North Pacific. In this set we found significant regional temporal trends of decreasing or increasing DO concentrations on various isopycnal surfaces. decreases were particularly after mid‐1980s subtropical gyre; mean rates change at 20–25°N for 1985–2010 −0.28 ± 0.08 μ mol kg −1 yr 25.5 σ θ Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW), −0.36 26.8...
Improved spatial and temporal representation of total alkalinity (TA) is expected to be an important component in monitoring changes the oceanic carbon cycle acidification over coming decades. For this reason, previous authors have sought develop apply empirical methods characterize TA surface ocean. However, there are regions such as North Pacific that proven difficult successfully represent through relationships based on temperature salinity with linear regression. Here we propose a new...
Abstract The rate of change dissolved oxygen (O 2 ) concentrations was analyzed over 1987–2011 for the high‐frequency repeat section along 165°E in western North Pacific. Significant trends toward decreasing O were detected northern subtropical to subtropical‐subarctic transition zones a broad range isopycnal horizons. On 25.3 σ θ between 25°N and 30°N Pacific Subtropical Mode Water, decrease reached −0.45 ± 0.16 µmol kg −1 yr . It is largely attributed deepening horizons reduction...
Abstract Ocean–atmosphere gas exchange in the Arctic Ocean is sensitive to global warming because decrease of sea‐ice covered area enhances exchange. Melting sea ice affects vertical transport dissolved gases. Few reports studies have described observations N 2 O or temporal variation sea‐to‐atmosphere flux. Therefore, production mechanisms this greenhouse and stratospheric ozone depleting remain unclear. We measured its isotopic signatures western shelf region Chukchi Sea surrounding areas...
Abstract Identifying ocean acidification and its controlling mechanisms is an important priority within the broader question of understanding how sustained anthropogenic CO 2 emissions are harming health ocean. Through extensive analysis observational data products for inorganic carbon, here we quantify rate at which proceeding in western tropical Pacific Warm Pool, revealing −0.0013 ± 0.0001 year −1 pH −0.0083 0.0007 saturation index aragonite years 1985–2016. However, mean total dissolved...
We used a new underway measurement system to investigate the partial pressure of methane (CH4) in surface seawater and overlying air Southern Ocean from late November 2012 mid-February 2013. The consisted cavity ring-down spectroscopy analyser shower-head type equilibrator. monthly mean atmospheric CH4 mixing ratios obtained agreed well (within 5 ppb) with those recorded at onshore baseline stations. saturation (<em>SR</em>, %), defined as concentration divided by...
Abstract Impact of climate change on marine biogeochemical parameters and ecosystem is one the important issues our environment. Direct evidence pelagic changes found with warming sea water sea‐level rise in main stream Kuroshio East China Sea western North Pacific during these three decades based analysis long‐term comprehensive hydrographic observations. In terms annual mean, rate surface air temperature ranged from 0.15 to 0.21°C per decade around Sea, which exceed global mean 0.128 ±...
